Kinect Hacked After Only a Week on the Market
It hasn’t been long since Microsoft Kinect’s November 4, 2025 release. In fact it hasn’t even completed it’s first week! However, like with all consoles - no matter what type - there will be those with a vested interest in tinkering with the product, and to encourage those people there was a recent contest from Adafruit offering $2,000 to hack Kinect for XBOX 360. The way you win is to be the first person to get the RGB to have the biggest distance values to be used. And, of course, it needs to be open source.
In response to the contest, an avid tinkerer, AlexP - took it on as a weekend challenge and has managed to hack into the console and get it to run on a Windows 7 environment.
The following will be a series of videos about what he has managed to work out so far:

For those wondering how Microsoft is taking this, well, let’s just say they’re not very happy about it:
“Microsoft does not condone the modification of its products,” a company spokesperson told CNET. “With Kinect, Microsoft built in numerous hardware and software safeguards designed to reduce the chances of product tampering. Microsoft will continue to make advances in these types of safeguards and work closely with law enforcement and product safety groups to keep Kinect tamper-resistant.”
I’m not sure what to tell you, Microsoft, but it looks like those safeguards aren’t working out very well if someone has managed to get into it in less than a week.
