BioShock 2 DLC Announced

Posted by David "Snarkasaur" Stewart on February 22nd, 2010

biozapFollowing the massive DLC trend of the past couple years, 2K has already announced some upcoming DLC for recently released BioShock 2, the first of which will be a purely multiplayer expansion titled “The Sinclair Solutions Test Pack.”  There isn’t a release date quite yet, unless you consider “soon” to be a release date, but it’ll cost you 400 ($5) on Xbox Live and $4.99 on PSN when it’s doled out and features the following:

  • Rank Increase to level 50 with Rank Rewards
  • New playable characters Louie McGraff and Oscar Calraca
  • 20 new trials (some only available after a player achieves a rank of 41 or higher)
  • A third weapon upgrade for each weapon
  • Five additional masks (some only available after a player achieves a rank of 41 or higher)

Not bad for a 5 buck DLC to be honest.  Most games charge more than that just for a rank increase.  For those into the multiplayer enough to have capped out already, this will definitely be welcome.  One interesting slice of this announcement pie mentioned future single player DLC, and as to what that could be, well it’s anyone’s guess.  I’d probably wager on some challenge rooms similar to the first game’s DLC as the story itself does not leave too much room for tinkering.  Either way, I’m always ready to return to Rapture.  Stayed tuned this week for our very own BioShock 2 review as well!

wawThe zombie survival mode in Call of Duty: World at War was a huge hit with shooters and zombie fans, so much so that Activision released an iPhone app based on Treyarch’s console version. Developed by Ideaworks Game Studio Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies gives gamers a faithful representation of one of the most popular online modes of 2009. The app which was released late last year is getting its first set of DLC. “VerrĂĽckt” (Zombie Asylum) map offers gamers a new location with new weapons, defenses and Perks-A Cola Machines. The map was originally released for the console version of World at War and now you can play it on the go.

The “Verrückt” map add-on can be downloaded now for $4.99. If you don’t have the original Call of Duty: World at War: ZOMBIES App you can download it, along with a free demo here. The iPhone/iPod touch game is a really fun adaptation of the console version and anyone who misses killing zombies when they aren’t at home should definitely give it a shot.

modern-warfare-2It seems only natural that something as awesomely extreme, as bodaciously frat-boy, as fist bumpingly hardcore as Modern Warfare 2 should have its DLC announced via the can of your favorite energy drink, MONSTER (caps used to convey extreme emotion).  Thus we have the screenshot below, detailing that some map packs will be hitting Xbox Live this spring (no word on PSN or PC releases, but the can is only so large).  Microsoft  officially announced that the content is incoming this Spring. That’s really the only thing I have to pass along.  There are no details regarding what maps, a decent timeframe for the date, or even how much the maps will cost.  Given how much money Activision made off this game, they should be paying us to download their maps.  We do know this important information though:  MONSTER will be giving away 5000 codes.  So drink up people.  Get your extreme energy on and go jump into the cheater-infested chaos that is Modern Warfare 2.

12005Now available for Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero are three songs from alternative metal rockers Breaking Benjamin. The band made their debut in 2002 with their critically-acclaimed album Saturate. But you won’t be getting any songs from that album. Instead you will be getting a track off of their second and third album along with the band’s newest single. The Breaking Benjamin Track Pack features “Sooner or Later” from the 2004 album We Are Not Alone, “Until The End” from the album Phobia and “Give Me A Sign” from their recently released Dear Agony Album.

As an added bonus for downloading the new tracks, you’ll have the opportunity to play with the band over Xbox Live on February 20th from 1-3pm EST. You will have to download the tracks in order to play with Breaking Benjamin and those who do you’ll want to look for their Gamertag: BBGWF.  Click here for more information on the Game with Fame featuring Breaking Benjamin.

The Breaking Benjamin Track Pack is out now via Xbox LIVE Marketplace for 440 Microsoft Points, from the PlayStation Store for $5.49 and the Wii Shop Channel for 550 Wii Points.  The three songs are also available for  individual purchase 60 Microsoft Points, $1.99 and 200 Wii Points each.

l4d2_thepassingThe previously announced Left 4 Dead 2 DLC, The Passing, has been given a late March release window for both Xbox 360 and PC versions. In a nutshell if you haven’t already read about it is that it will consist of the new team of survivors (Rochelle, Ellis, Nick and Coach) meeting up with ye olde L4D crew (Zoey, Louis, Bill and Francis) who will be non-playable characters that you meet up with during the campaign. A new uncommon infected will be added to the new campaign as well called the Fallen Survivors. These are those genius rat-bastard humans who thought they were immune to the infection and… weren’t. Valve has mentioned these infected will drop items such as med-packs or ammo.

dragon-age-origins-return-to-ostagar-cailanWith the unfortunate last minute release date delay, the Return to Ostagar content had the misfortune of following in the mighty footsteps of Mass Effect 2. Had it come out with time to spare before the wicked began feasting upon their precious space cargo, it may have seen better sales. I’m sure many are more than unwilling to switch back to BioWare’s “other” RPG that players may have pillaged and ransacked several times over by now. As much as I love Mass Effect from the bottom of my heart — I was willing to pop that glorious disc in and find out if it’s worth your valuable time (and money).

30_Seconds_to_MarsReleasing this week on Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero are three tracks from the Los Angeles-based band 30 Seconds to Mars. The DLC tracks features “Attack” and “From Yesterday” off of their platinum selling sophomore album A Beautiful Life along with “Kings and Queens”, the first single from This is War released late last year. 30 Seconds to Mars, formed by Jared and Shannon Leto, made their debut in 2002 and were met with immediate success with their “post-grunge” and “melodic hard rock” style.

4294857526_fb76025736What kind of DLC does a Game of the Year seek to sell to its masses of fans? The answer to that question might not please everyone because it’s DLC based around the multiplayer aspect of the game. For others, that’s just fine.

The DLC is appropriately titled “The UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves PlayStation Heroes Skin Pack” and is just that: a skin pack.  Before we get upset and jump the gun, Naughty Dog has actually done something different regarding skins, in a way borrowing a page from another PlayStation exclusive company in Media Molecule.  The Heroes Skin Pack isn’t just a bunch of new outfits for Drake and Chloe to parade around in, but rather adds character skins from other exclusive system games, including Resistance 2, Infamous, and Killzone 2.

4294857274_5f3b428b5eThe fine folks over at Guerilla Games, Insomniac, and Sucker Punch all banded together to allow such an event, and the names dropped so far are Sev and a Helghast soldier from Killzone 2, Nathan Hale and a Chimera from Resistance 2, and Cole (red and blue) and Zeke from Infamous (personally I can’t wait to shoot Zeke in his fat face).  Those are six of the seven announced skins anyway.  No word on the final, mystery skin.  It will either be epic or just completely not worth mentioning.  I’d love to put my money on a Solid Snake skin, but it wouldn’t be a wise investment.  Perhaps Kratos (with a gun)?  The most probable scenario is that they’re counting the bad and good versions of Cole as separate entities.

The Heroes Skin Pack should be available on the 28th of this month for around 5 bucks.  I’m not sure the decision to charge for a skin pack is necessarily wise, but they might have to pay for likeness rights so who am I to judge?

4294857802_be4a98f538Also announced today is the addition of an Uncharted 2 demo that will hit the PSN at the same time as the skin pack.  Though everyone with a PlayStation 3 should have played this game by now, many are yet foolish and refuse to do so without some firsthand evidence that it is in fact epic.  Well here’s your chance.  Play a demo, hopefully it won’t be a bad demo like the one released with the first Uncharted, and prepare yourself for the awesome.

heavy-rain-1If the four characters whom you’ll get to control in the upcoming game Heavy Rain just seems, well, not quite enough, then you’re in luck.  According to some statements made in a recent interview, game creator David Cage has revealed that in DLC episodes (Heavy Rain Chronicles), players will get an opportunity to play as the Origami Killer himself in order to learn more about his origins.

All episodes in Chronicles will serve as prequels to the main game, giving you background information about the various characters. For example, why Madison Paige is an insomniac or how Norman Jayden became addicted to triptocaine.  Each episode will be approximately an hour long, although delivery method and price hasn’t been clarified.  However, those who pre-order from select retailers will get access to the first DLC episode before anyone else and for free.

ME2ScreenDo you like free stuff? Of course you like free stuff, who the hell doesn’t!? We’ll if you’re like me you’ll take any free DLC you can get and BioWare has you covered for one of the most anticipated games of this year. The Cerberus Network, an in-game portal in Mass Effect 2, will grant you full access to downloadable content and news at no extra cost. This new feature is activated via a unlock code that is packaged within the game, meaning those who purchased the game brand new will have free access to the network and those who purchased it used will have to pay a one-time fee. No word on how much the one-time fee will be but if it’s anything like EA’s other packed in codes it could cost around $15.

“The Cerberus Network augments and extends the rich universe of Mass Effect 2,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder, BioWare and Group General Manager of the RPG/MMO Group of EA. “We’re thrilled to be able to reward loyal BioWare and Mass Effect fans with ongoing, high quality content and provide a direct channel for our players to dive deeper into the intriguing lore of Mass Effect.”

The first DLC pack, set to release on launch day January 26th, will feature new missions and in-game items. The mission will introduce Zaeed a “rugged and deadly gun-for-hire” who is recruited to join Shepard’s mission. After launch, BioWare will release another pack that will include the Hammerhead vehicle, the Cerberus Assault Armor and the M-22 Eviscerator Shotgun.

The Cerberus Network sounds like it can be a huge selling point for people who want to wait and save money for a used copy. This is just a pretty nice bonus for those who were already going to buy the game on day one and if BioWare and provide a constant stream of content, this new feature could change the way publishers offer DLC.

ostagardlcFor a day, Dragon Age-rs with an Xbox 360 copy of the game and an internet connection were happily downloading the Return to Ostagar DLC.  Unfortunately, they were downloading a broken version of it, and because of that Bioware has pulled it back off Live and they can all wait patiently with the rest of us.

l4d2I’m kidding. You’re not going to pass on Left 4 Dead 2, are you? Of course not. Especially when its first DLC add-on is set to be released this spring. Dubbed “The Passing,” this add-on episode will take place directly after the “Dead Center” campaign in Left 4 Dead 2. Per the official Valve press release, the Survivors will navigate  a small town in rural Georgia, where they’ll cross paths with the familiar favorite Survivors from the original game: Zoey, Francis, Bill, and Louis.

In addition to the augmented single player, multiplayer, and co-op it will offer, “The Passing” also drags with it a new “uncommon common” class of zombie as well as a brand new co-op mode of play that has not yet been disclosed. It will also be paired with brand new arenas for use in the various multiplayer avenues of the game.

“The Passing will become the most important campaign in the Left 4 Dead story, as all the Survivors are being called together in one campaign,” said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. “It will also be a huge offering of new gameplay content, with something new for every game mode plus a new uncommon common and weaponry.”

This is indeed an interesting move — I’m curious to see how the joining of both crews will play out, as it’s one possibility I never honestly contemplated. How will they react to each other? Will the old Survivors be playable? I suppose as we creep nearer to the launch date, time will tell.

“The Passing” is set for release on the Xbox 360 and PC, but pricing has not yet been announced.
