GameStop Late to the “Digital Download Party”

GameStop may have arrived unstylishly tardy to the whole “digital download party,” but maybe we should all extend our courtesy and forget we’ve been practicing this immediacy via Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network since, well, a while now. It’s simply another case of weighing each service against another, so let’s see if GameStop has anything Earth-shattering to offer, shall we?

Going nationwide this week is a DLC Center offered by GameStop and it’ll grant consumers the ability to purchase digitally delivered add-on content as well as full-blown video game titles. Tony Bartel, President of GameStop, mentioned “The beauty of our DLC Centers is in the convenience and options it offers our customers when they are looking to purchase add-on packs or full-length DLC content of top-selling titles for console games or popular Xbox Live games.” A code for immediate console download will be printed on the receipt and trade-in credit is accepted.

With limited titles to offer and no immediate plans to even consider Nintendo, Bartel still fished for an intriguing incentive to persuade us consumers to use GameStop’s service, adding “Customers pay only for the specific content they want, such as $14.99 for the Lara Croft game, rather than buying bulk points they don’t immediately need and will subsequently have to manage. Also, customers can pay for DLC with any form of payment we accept, including cash, credit or even trade credits.” Essentially, I’ll have to get dressed, get in my car, and drive to my local GameStop to purchase an invisible copy of a game I may as well get a physical copy of. What do you think?

I mean, for myself, there's little convenience to it, but the main convenience is to people who don't have access to credit cards to use online or who don't want to buy point cards. There's a market that they're tending to, still.

  • Paranerd says:

Amazon does something similar to this, so I guess it makes sense, especially if you don't want to buy points in weird bulks. “I'm buying 1600 points and I only want to use 1200 of them! ^_^…wait…-_-'”

Amazon hasn't added any new XBLA titles since Call of Duty Classic back in Nov/Dec 2009. I guess the biggest thing about Gamestop selling codes is you can use trade credit to get codes to give as gifts, without having to give someone more points than the game is worth.

yeah thats true, its good for those who dont like to use their cc for online purchases. Sony kind of solved the issue of having extra points on their own by allowing ppl just to pay for the cost of the game instead of having to buy $20 credits at a time. if only Microsoft could follow.

  • TheHerp says:

wow didnt even notice that until you mentioned it. looks like they are updating PSN games only. thats strange.

As of today Amazon is officially outta the digi-game market.

Totally un-related note, Popcap games is coming out with Plants vs. Zombies for Xbox and Gamestop has a compilation disc of the full thing plus Zuma and Peggle. First time in a while Gamestop has put something like this up.

I also noticed that they don't put the items on sale. For example, during the recent PSN summer sale, they were all full price on Amazon.

  • CuatroChihuahuas says:

I know I personally don't trust my CC anywhere near microsoft.
