Coming September 7th to the 360, PS3, and PC collectively is yet another DLC for Mass Effect 2 focusing on Asari Scientist Liara T’soni, her troublesome mission, and of course, her relationship with Commander Shepard. If the thousand-year-old Justicar in Mass Effect 2 named Samara left you just as sexually frustrated as I, you’ll still have a chance at woo-ing another blue chick from your past. The Lair of The Shadow Broker DLC will retail for $10.00 or 800 Microsoft Points. Don’t forget to check-out the trailer for the upcoming DLC.

Not everyone made the choice at the end of Dragon Age that would allow this DLC to exist, but if you didn’t, you missed out on one of the most interesting choices in Dragon Age: Origins.  Morrigan, a definite fan-favorite character, leaves the protagonist with a cliffhanger of an ending if you choose one way, and it is the next, and potentially final, DLC of the game that will answer this monument of a question: Where did she go?

BioWare has done a more than fair job so far at releasing DLC.  A few of their packs have been decent, a couple above and beyond what I generally expect of DLC, and now with the release of Golems of Amgarrak we get a new end of the spectrum.  If you don’t want to read the rest of this review, I can tell you how much this DLC is worth in dollar terms right now: one shiny American dollar.  Big Dragon Age fans might be interested in throwing down more.  The measly five dollars they ask for it, however, is overpriced for what it’s worth.  In short, this is Dragon Age’s worst DLC to date, and its shortest, to boot.

GameStop may have arrived unstylishly tardy to the whole “digital download party,” but maybe we should all extend our courtesy and forget we’ve been practicing this immediacy via Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network since, well, a while now. It’s simply another case of weighing each service against another, so let’s see if GameStop has anything Earth-shattering to offer, shall we?

Some Mass Effect fans noticed something strange with the “Lair of the Shadow Broker” screenshots: the guns in them don’t exist in the current game or DLC. Quickly responding was BioWare community manager Jarrett Lee, who explained that these new weapons were part of an upcoming DLC weapon pack that will be released before “Lair of the Shadow Broker.”

DLC in games is hit or miss with a lot of people. If it attempts to expand the story and lore of the game, it more often than not succeeds at drawing in those who were face-to-screen for hours with the game the first time around. Alan Wake’s upcoming DLC release (July 27) “The Signal” is something I can easily label right now a “hit.” It successfully expands the story past the ending of the game, provides solid gameplay time, and actually intensifies any feeling of craving that light for shelter or just wondering if you will ever escape Bright Falls. In The Signal, Bright Falls manages to up the ante and gets a whole lot crazier. This place has been doomed from the start.

If there was one major plot concern that wasn’t addressed in Mass Effect 2, it was why the hell the Shadow Broker was so interested in Commander Shepard’s body. The Mass Effect comic mini-series, Redemption, lightly explored the struggle my ex-girlfriend Liara went through to recover Shepard’s body. In the latest DLC that BioWare has announced today titled “Lair of the Shadow Broker,” you, your crew and Liara T’Soni will join ranks to seek out the Shadow Broker and hopefully find out the secret behind his plans. It could be just plain greed with the intent to profit off the body of a strong Commander of the galaxy, Saren’s killer, but it has to be more than that.

Think you’ll be spending as much on Dance Central DLC as you did on Rock Band DLC? Well, perhaps you will reconsider when you learn that additional songs for Dance Central will cost more than the typical $2 per song price for Rock Band songs. Joystiq reports that Dance Central project lead Kasson Crooker has said the process for creating Dance Central DLC is more complex and different than from producing Rock Band DLC, and therefore more content will be more expensive.

LOOK AT THIS PHOTOGRAPH! EVERY TIME I DO IT MAKES ME LAUGH. IT’S THE BAND FOR NEXT WEEK’S DLC, FOR THE MUSIC GAME FROM MTV. Lame lyrics changing aside… Harmonix is following up last week’s Miley Cyrus DLC with six similar sounding songs for next week’s Rock Band DLC of Nickelback.  The songs are the usual $1.99 (or 160 MS Points or 200 Wii Points), with the track pack priced at $9.99 (800 MS Points; sorry Wii owners, you’re once again left out of track packs).

At last year’s Comic Con it was announced that LittleBigPlanet would be blessed with some kind of Marvel Comics Pack to play with at some point in the future.  Details remained scant.  Today, Marvel itself announced the full character list of costumes for download, as well as a start date of July 7th.  Four characters will be release then, with four additional ones every week after that.  In addition to the costumes, there will be a Marvel Level Kit, where players must adventure through comic-book themed levels in an attempt to stop some nefarious plan by Magneto.  These levels will be full of creation tools to gather up so that players can make their own super-hero levels.  Media Molecule has even included a much-needed rooftop background to provide the perfect setting for some heroic shenanigans.

Green Day: Rock Band drops next week, but that doesn’t mean those that aren’t buying it can’t enjoy new songs to play. Harmonix is continuing its weekly DLC for Rock Band and Rock Band 2 with a Deftones track pack and a song each from Boys Like Girls and Crown of Thorns. The songs are the usual $1.99 (or 160 MS Points or 200 Wii Points), with the Deftones track pack priced at $5.49 (440 MS Points; sorry Wii owners, you’re once again left out of track packs).

Tracks making their way to Rock Band on June 8:

  • Deftones – “Cherry Waves”
  • Deftones – “Hole in the Earth”
  • Deftones – “Minerva”
  • Boys Like Girls – “The Great Escape”
  • Crown of Thorns – “Rock Ready”

For players (like myself) who have yet to get their fill on Lost Planet 2, Capcom has given us a heads-up on some new multiplayer maps that will be available soon. The first of the two to be released, Dockyard Battle, is set in Episode 4’s battleship factory and will support up to sixteen players. The second is a returning map from the original Lost Planet: Extreme Condition. Known as Frozen Wasteland, this map contains the signature tower and snowy trenches that will surely be familiar to series veterans.

Being a fan of Dante’s Inferno and the hellish world it fashioned for me to slice my way through, I’ve kept an eye out on the DLC that EA has been throwing at us. I haven’t run through the “Dark Forest” DLC because I forgot they gave out a code to new release purchasers, but the “Trials of St. Lucia” caught my eye moreso than the Forest ever did.  I think it must have been the iconic Lucia herself who creates such a captivating front-cover image for this type of thing. Seeing a video of her in flight only further piqued my interest. When asked to review the DLC, I said, “hell yeah.”

This is short news, but news nonetheless!  Today on Xbox Press a listing for a Dragon Age: Origins DLC was posted.  It doesn’t say what the “Darkspawn Chronicles” DLC is about, and under the description just gives the original game’s tagline.  However, we can speculate, no?  I’m hoping for something prequel-ish, but that’s wishful fanboyism.  Or maybe the tale of young Scroot?  The Darkspawn who wanted to be a Grey Warden?  Maybe?

The listing is just for Xbox users right now, though that’s obviously going to change as DLC always appears on superior systems as well.  It’s priced at 400 Microsoft Points, which is roughly 5 bucks, and slated for May 18th (smart to compete with Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Red Dead Redemption!).  More on this story as it develops.
