Nintendo Taking Another Shot at 3D Portable Gaming
Nintendo today announced they will be bringing a 3D version of their portable system sometime during the fiscal year ending March 2011. Nintendo’s goal is to create a system in which “games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.” Being dubbed the “Nintendo 3DS” will be backwards compatible with any DS and DSi game. They plan on announcing more at this year’s E3 held on June 15 but already people are speculating on how the system might work.
Some are thinking they will use the face-tracking technology which has already been used in a DSi game 3D Hidden Picture. The game uses the built-in camera to detect where the player is and shifts the game’s viewing perspective based on that.
This is very unlike Nintendo to announce a new system in development this soon before the big gaming event of the year and especially since the new DSiXL, a DSi featuring a larger screen, is set to hit retailers very soon. Hopefully their final design doesn’t involve looking at a bright red screen causing numerous headaches and eye problems.

Definitely need more information on this for sure…it looks like just another DS rendition, but they're touting it like it's the next generation of handhelds. The 3D effect is cool, but…not that generation breaking.
Whatever. I'll stick with my DSi unless this proves banging.
I'm not quite sure about this whole “3D” direction that everyone's going in. My guess is that it will be a while before anyone can truly implement this concept well. But I'm always the skeptic. I also am not entirely sure why you'd want a 3D handheld, but I guess we will see.
The game in this video is already out for DSi in japan. If Nintendo has announced a 3DS, it had better be an actual new generation, and not just a repackaging like the lite, DSi, and DSi XL.
