VUDU Brings HD On-Demand Video to PS3

In yet another attempt to make the PS3′s US slogan stand true (“It only does everything”), Sony has revealed that VUDU, an HD video-on-demand service, will be heading for the XMB starting November 23. The new service, which is subscription free and relies on a pay-per-view model, will be available to all PSN users (not just Plus members) starting with next week’s update.Like the Netflix and Hulu apps, the VUDU feature is available through the “Video” section of the XMB. Once you’ve downloaded the app, you’ll see it appear in the XMB under the “Video” icon and from there, will have access to thousands of movie titles – available for instant viewing in HD and HDX 1080p formats with no buffering or downloading, and with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 Surround Sound.

Rental prices start at $2, with some movies available for two nights. Many films are available the day they are released on DVD, making VUDU a nice companion to Netflix (and Sony’s video store) for when you want to see the latest movies right away. I know the price for the regular HD option is cheaper than what my cable provider charges, so I could definitely see using this from time to time.

The service also allows you to buy movies, although it’s not clear if this will be available in the PS3 version or not.
