GOTY 2010: Stephanie’s Top 5 Picks

Since we don't all play the same games here at Spawn Kill, voting for a unified winner just won't work out and do justice to our favorite games. So a few of us decided to share out Top 5 (and a specialty pick) this week before we're deafened by 2011's sex machine cranking sounds of amazing games to come (like L.A. Noire, clearly). One thing all of my Top 5 picks probably have in common is longevity (and most of them a damn good story) - I like to get my money's worth on top of my blissful pleasure. Most of these shining gems have lasted me hours and hours and hours of enjoyment. So here are my Top 5 Game of the Year picks for 2010.

StarCraft II Beta Returns Amidst Real ID Controversy

About a month ago, Blizzard ended Phase 1 of the StarCraft II beta and said that it would return for a second round of testing a few weeks before the game's release. That time has come and the beta has returned with patch 16, which includes a few Zerg fixes including an Ultralisk buff, an unlock of the other AI difficulties, new maps, and a new batch of achievements. Of course, the return of the beta comes right after the company's controversial announcement of the proposed change to the official Blizzard forums. The "Real ID" system, Blizzard's "optional" friend system for StarCraft II and World of Warcraft, would be incorporated into the forums so that instead of usernames appearing, posters' real names would display instead.

The Light and Dark of Video Games: Sarah Kerrigan

Though video games have matured over the past decade, the brilliance of Starcraft cannot be discounted. As a vehicle for story telling, Starcraft brought a new level of maturity to a sea of PC gamers. The multiplayer aspect of Starcraft has survived in tournaments across the nation, and even went on to become the national sport of South Korea, and while this is an achievement in gaming, the massive popularity also helped to take the spotlight off of the games fantastic single player campaign.
