Atlus comes through again for the fans. I feel like a broken record every time I write about them, but they just keep one-upping the competition. This time it’s some apparel straight out of the game, which you don’t find too often. Persona 3 Portable pre-orders from Gamestop or Amazon (and honestly where else are you going to pre-order a game?) will net you Junpei’s hat. It’s a one size fits all, adjustable cap with that weird logo that as far as I know has no particular meaning but could be totally obscure Shin Megami Tensei knowledge.

I’ll admit to never using Junpei. With characters like Aigis and Mitsuru, who had time for dudes? Still, where I was once on the edge about purchasing a 100+ hour game, I’m now sold (I’d have bought it eventually anyway). Keep in mind, supplies are limited, so get those pre-orders hopping or you might miss out on some delicious swag. Also keep in mind they said the same thing about the Devil Summoner 2 Raiho plushies, and they still have those available and are super cheap. Persona 3 Portable hits store shelves on July 6th, 2010.

Atlus and Persona series fans had heard about the infamous Persona 3 Portable months ago, but that was sadly for the Japanese version. While SMT fanatics played through Persona PSP, we waited (as patiently as we could) for today: the official announcement that Persona 3 Portable or P3P, will arrive in North America in July (both on UMD and via PSN).

Shin Megami Tensei fans have had a lot to be happy about lately, and it looks like Atlus is giving MegaTen fans even more to smile about. Today they officially announced their newest SMT game, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey for Nintendo DS. One of the first original entries in the franchise in recent history, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is a first-person sci-fi RPG that has already received the highest Famitsu review score in Shin Megami Tensei history.

Hit the break for some more details on the story, a few screens, and some concept art.

In the wide world of RPGs, games that offer the same experience as the Shin Megami Tensei series are quite scarce. It’s been more than a decade since the release of Revelations: Persona, a mere piece of the venerable and expansive Shin Megami Tensei (MegaTen) series (though more of a spinoff at the time of its inception) and these days it’s never looked better. Atlus, famed publisher of quirky niche titles that go a long way to satiate our bloodlust for solid roleplaying experiences, has released a special revival of the kooky adventure many of us played as mere tots on the original PlayStation — now for its soon-to-be defunct cousin, the PlayStation Portable.

Persona on the PSP is set to release via the downloadable service for the less-than-valued PSP Go as well as sold at retail locations on the same date of September 22nd. As usual, Atlus will be pampering players with the usual Atlus Spoils treatment, but to receive the goods you must purchase the retail hard copy of the game. The copy sold in stores will be a Collector’s Edition box at default, packaged with a two-disc soundtrack from the game. The game will retail in both locations for $39.99.

Combined with the two notions that RPG gamers are usually collectors and proud of their purchases that live on for decades and that the PSP Go is highly overpriced for the market, being the same price as a Nintendo Wii (which is also overpriced for the ol’ two Gamecubes stuck together bit, you ain’t foolin’ me Nintendo!), I therefore use my clairvoyency to assume that the UMD version might end up a more popular, viable solution. We love extras, how can you turn that down?!

Persona really got popular with the PS2 releases of Persona 3 which helped spurn awareness and excitement for Persona 4. But there was joy that existed before all this, long ago in the shadowy realms of the Playstation with the original Persona. In the year 1996, Atlus released a spin off game of the niche series Shin Megami Tensei called Revelations: Persona. Much like most recent installments, the game features an unnamed protagonist who fights demons with the help of demons in a shadowy alternate reality. The game received high marks from the critics, though it never took off like its Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest peers. Nevertheless, after the success of the latest games, the team over at Atlus had the inspiration to remake this original Persona game, and thank the gaming gods that they did. It’s already received heaps of praise in Japan, and looks to be shaping up nicely for its September stateside release. And as they so often do, Atlus has rewarded its follower with a sneak peak walkthrough video, shown below.
