Community Voice #3: Social Gaming

There is a word many of us dread to hear voiced in the light of day. It embodies all of our darkest fears and insanities. It hunts down our friends and family relentlessly, and we are forced to sit and watch as they become devoured by its ever-expanding mass. I am of course talking about FarmVille. [cue organs blasting and creepy lighting effects]

Community Voice #2: E3 2010

This week's Community Voice as always wants to hear from your prying minds. We're curious -- what are you all hoping to see come out of E3? Can't stop thinking about the 3DS? The PlayStation Move been on your mind more often than you'd care to admit? Is there a particular game you're simply dying to get the inside digs on? Let us know! We have three staff members (my lovely self included) heading to the expo this year, so if you have anything you'd like us to check out in particular, this might just be the place to yell at us. So get going. What do you want to see at this year's biggest gaming con?

Community Voice #1: Review Scores

With Metacritic as the hot-button issue lately, this week's Community Voice wants to hear opinions on those numbers that make Metacritic what it is. What do you think of review scores? Are they your be-all? Do you take them with a grain of salt? Do you completely bypass the actual review in order to get to those brain-satisfying numbers? And if so, should we reviewers even bother with the actual writing or are we wasting our time and yours? Conversely, should we abandon the numbers altogether and rate games purely with our words? Is there a happy medium? How do you feel about 5 stars versus an out of 10 system? A letter grade versus a 1-100 scale? Speak up! We want to hear your honest opinions. (more...)

Agree to Disagree 08: Silent Protagonists

Though we've certainly come quite a long way from the days of the arcade where a speaking character was a luxury, games today retain elements that can be traced back to the golden days of gaming. Yes, you still find characters who never (or rarely) speak. Yes, these characters do not speak so that you may live vicariously through them. You speak for them. And in some cases, you'll choose what "they're" saying, but is it really them speaking? And how much control do you really have over a set narrative when you have limited control over what they're "really" saying? Are they simply a vehicle for designers to skip over an entire step? (more...)

Opinions. Everyone’s got ‘em. Especially the zany sexy staff of Spawn Kill. And we know every single one of you wants to share your own as well. Every Friday, we’ll be bringing you a hot topic that’s been cracked wide open for discussion. Your job is to load up and deliver your best opinions on the subject at hand in Spawn Kill’s Agree to Disagree column. This weeks discussion could be a doozy. Basically we want to know your thoughts on the linearity present in games, or lack thereof.

Better Worlds

How do you explore a world where satellites can capture an image of nearly anything from miles above the surface of the Earth? How do you adventure on a planet rife with unknown diseases and poisons liable to kill you in seconds with no known remedies? How do defeat that fickle boss, Boredom? The answer to all three of these questions is, arguably, you don't. And because you don't, you pick up a controller and you play a video game. (more...)

Inside the Heart of Homecoming Thumbnail

Inside the Heart of Homecoming

Many people did not welcome Silent Hill: Homecoming, and it's understandable considering the odd influence of the film adaptation on the game. Despite the lukewarm reception, I found it to boast yet another psychologically twisted and enjoyable Silent Hill story---if not smoother and better paced than any one before it. While it may not focus entirely on the overwhelming feeling of isolation, the game does something unique to the series: taking a darkly close look at the founding families of Shepherd's Glen, who are just as deranged as the infamous town from which they came. But most importantly, Homecoming still plays with ideas of personal hell and madness---this time with the protagonist Alex Shepherd. (more...)
