NBA 2K11’s Cover: An Attempt to Win Back Fans?

There’s no doubting the fact that NBA 2K10 was a financial success last year, and for the most part was also a critical success. But what a lot of gamers found out about 2K10 right when they started playing the game was that it was full of technical problems. Was this expected? To some, yes. 2K Sports hasn’t had the greatest track record when it comes to polish and online play, but even the NBA 2K vets were shocked at how buggy the game was. So when the new cover was announced it got me thinking, was this just a way to make the game stand-out on the store shelves, or was this 2K’s way of saying “Hey, we’re sorry for last year, we have Jordan now and he’s cool right? This year is going to be totally different I promise. Isn’t Jordan awesome?” and then still give us a buggy game?

For many years now the NBA 2K series has been the king of the hardwood. Sure there have been other basketball games released but none of them have come close the quality and gameplay seen every year from 2K Sports. One of the hardest things NBA 2K has to deal with every year are the expectations from the fans and it wasn’t about to change this year with NBA 2K10. 2K Sports was hoping to meet expectations by improving on their winning formula while adding brand new modes like My Player. While some of these modes are great additions, NBA 2K10 is full of framerate issues, crashes, server issues and other annoying bugs that ultimately make it a poor basketball experience. It makes me wonder how the game passed testing and how 2K Sports was so careless to allow this series to fall so far from greatness.
The NBA 2K series has been the top basketball franchise for many years, especially recently, where they have been virtually uncontested. Last year NBA 2K9 once again took the basketball crown with its smooth animation and gameplay, amazing graphics and solid online play. 2K Sports was able to bring speed to a basketball sim without making it feel like an arcade title. With EA Sports actively trying to create better game modes with their Be A Pro and Dynamic DNA system, it’s apparent that 2K needs to step up their create a pro modes and offer more to fans of the series. In an effort to do so they announced today NBA 2K 10: Draft Combine, a new download only title that gives players a head start on the new season.
