DC Universe Online Gets Release Date
The MMO, DC Universe, has finally announced its release date - 01/11/11. A nice choice of date, I would have to say. This release date is slated for North America on the PC and PS3 (UK Release Date: 1/14/11). If you're planning on grabbing one, the PC version will cost $49.99 while the PS3 is $59.99. Both versions comes with a free 30-day subscription to the MMO. After the trial, it will cost $15 a month – or $199 for a lifetime subscription.

The president of Interplay Eric Caen told Edge Magazine that a group of about 90 people are hard at work on a Fallout MMO and we should expect the title sometime in 2012. When asked about Bethesda's current involvement in Fallout franchise Caen is quoted as saying, "We appreciate some portions of Bethesda's work, and we're not necessarily fans of everything. I think they miss a lot of the humor, and the fans seem to agree with that. Fallout 3 was a little bit too serious - that's definitely not where we’re going. Our Fallout MMO will be extremely funny."

Let's pretend for a moment that you are a big budget game company. Let's also pretend that you have a historic and well-loved franchise. Now, imagine that you plan to make an MMO with said franchise name and universe. You would think that you would then utilize all your resources, both financial and intellectual, to produce a product that people would play to the point at which time disappeared. Makes sense, right? Obviously, not everyone who plays games the likes of World of Warcraft have given up their families and jobs for the game, but the potential is there, and if anything, Blizzard wants to encourage its players to devote as much time as possible to the world of Azeroth.
Apparently, Square-Enix has decided they want to do things differently. How, do you ask? Well, perhaps by making their player base tired of their game before it has even been fully released. That's right, I'm talking about the fatigue system.

Comic Jumper developer Twisted Pixel Games revealed on their website that the company has finished working on an unannounced console MMO title with Turbine. If you are not familiar with Turbine, it runs The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online, and it was acquired by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group this past April. We do not know anything else about the title right now, and Twisted Pixel Games has said they "can't spill the beans on their [Turbine's] top-secret game."

When Final Fantasy XIV was first announced, I met the news with trepidation and curiosity. I really liked Final Fantasy XI, but couldn’t stick out the massive grind that the first year or so of the game required. I quit and looked back with regret later upon hearing that they'd actually improved things quite a bit over the years. I am a fan of the series to the bitter end. There has not been a game I didn’t love, despite the criticisms levied against the majority of them lately. It was with all this in mind that I sat down at a computer at Square Enix's massive E3 booth for some hands on time with Final Fantasy XIV. My opinion has changed, but not drastically because I’m still hesitant to endorse the direction it’s headed. However, I also find myself wanting to play more, and have a hunch that this might be the game that brings me back into the MMORPG fold.

Activision-Blizzard's CFO, Thomas Tippl, recently revealed in an interview that more Activision products will be going the way of World of Warcraft. This means players should expect to see more online monetization models in the future for Activision games. This includes currently released games like Call of Duty. Mr. Tippl stated, "We have great experience also on Call of Duty with the success we had on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. A lot of that knowledge is getting actually built into the Battle.Net platform and the design of that." Now, I know that in the future of Blizzard products you'll be able to chat with friends playing WoW, Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo through Battle.Net. I wonder if Call of Duty would be included in that circle. (more...)
