Review: Mimana Iyar Chronicles
For a long while, PSP owners had a drought where RPGs were concerned. Crisis Core is a great game and Half Minute Hero is probably the most innovative RPG on any console, but compared to the massive catalog of RPGs over there on the DS, PSP owners have been poorly served. Because of this inattention, many might find Mimana Iyar Chronicles a welcome addition to the catalog. They might be blinded to its faults out of sheer need for something in the role-playing realm. They might tell people it's a good game simply because there is so little to compare it to. Do not be fooled, because this is not the RPG you're looking for.

The word “final” implies a number of things. The foremost of these meanings would be that the final something would be the last of those things, the end of the line. Final also implies ultimacy, the end-all in terms of significance. While both of these definitions were true at one point in time for games in the Final Fantasy series, neither of which hold up for the latest iteration. Surely not the last of its kind, and most definitely not the best of its kin, Final Fantasy XIII is a beautiful example of how JRPGs, while still full of polish, have mostly lost sight of what once gave them their core appeal.

Back during its 2008 release, Lost Odyssey was a big deal. It was a brand new IP, it was console-exclusive, and it sprung from the creative mind of Hironobu Sakaguchi, famed Final Fantasy series creator (maybe you've heard of it?). The studio behind Lost Odyssey was relatively new at the time, with only two games on their resume. ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat was a DS tactical RPG only released in Japan, well received but unknown in the states, and Blue Dragon was a cartoonish RPG released both in Japan and North American with maybe the worst aesthetic in the history of gaming. That's possibly an overstatement. The truth is I tried to like Blue Dragon, it had aspects that made it intriguing as an RPG and all total I probably sunk 20-25 hours into it, but in the end I couldn't get over how stupid it looked and so quit. Argue with me if you like.

It feels good to be an Atlus fan. Where other publishers might disappoint and money-grub, Atlus fans can basically always expect to find something around the corner to look forward to. 2010 brings an announcement no different with a game called Hexyz Force. Hexyz Force is an RPG on the PSP, and that's rarely a bad thing. (more...)

This generation Japanese RPGs haven't really ridden the momentum they had going for them during the PS2 days. Both the PS1 and the PS2 were literally an everlasting cave of wonders for gamers who love JRPGs. Unfortunately this generation I can't say the same yet, with only a handful of them out 3-4 years into this generation, none of them are really much to write home about. My optimism hasn't been flushed down the toilet yet, because aside from the powerhouse that is Final Fantasy XIII, there are still a few such as Resonance of Fate and White Knight Chronicles coming down the pipeline with something worth offering to the genre. Today I got a little hands on time with the PS3 exclusive White Knight Chronicles to see what this has different in store for us.

In the wide world of RPGs, games that offer the same experience as the Shin Megami Tensei series are quite scarce. It's been more than a decade since the release of Revelations: Persona, a mere piece of the venerable and expansive Shin Megami Tensei (MegaTen) series (though more of a spinoff at the time of its inception) and these days it's never looked better. Atlus, famed publisher of quirky niche titles that go a long way to satiate our bloodlust for solid roleplaying experiences, has released a special revival of the kooky adventure many of us played as mere tots on the original PlayStation -- now for its soon-to-be defunct cousin, the PlayStation Portable. Ignition Entertainment is bringing another Marvelous game to North America, and this time its the Tales-esque RPG Arc Rise Fantasia, a Wii-exclusive and first console title for Japanese developers 7th Dragon and imageepooch, the latter most known for the Luminous Arc series on DS. Ignition hopes this title will be the deep Fantasy RPG Wii owners have been waiting for, and fans of the Tales series will most likely enjoy the similar look and gameplay found in Arc Rise Fantasia. Right now, a release date of summer 2010 has been announced, and I'm sure more information will arrive in the upcoming months. Hit the break for some screens! (more...)

Considering Japan recently got treated to news of a sequel to Level-5's HD JRPG White Knight Chronicles, it is even better news to hear that the original will finally be heading to North America. Set to arrive in the infamous "Q1 2010" window (approximately February 2010, to be more specific), it could be possible that, despite being highly anticipated by many North American RPG fans, it may get lost in the deluge of titles arriving in those first three months of 2010. Although no official announcement has been made, last Thursday's PSN update included the addition of a new trailer of the game, revealing the Febuary 2010 release date. Hit the break to see the trailer -- in English! (more...)

Tri-Ace, you little rebel, you. Known for developing a handful of highly successful and deep JRPGs such as the Star Ocean series as well as the Valkyrie Profile series, Tri-Ace has been known to hold hands with JRPG behemoth Square-Enix (who has broken my heart numerous times and continues to disappoint) -- until now. Tri-Ace is now partnering with Sega to publish the upcoming multi-platform RPG Resonance of Fate. (more...)
