I’ve done my best to think of an accurate way to describe 3D Dot Game Heroes, and the only adjective that seems to fit is ‘paradoxical’. 3D Dot Game Heroes is both modern and retro, silly and serious, easy and difficult, and lastly, both homage and parody. This game easily fits into a very familiar category of games, yet everything it presents to the player is unexpectedly new and delightful. Putting this game into a nutshell is both impossible and highly probable.

I started playing Demon’s Souls the day it was released. I hadn’t actually planned on buying it. With Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend still taking up plenty of my game time, as well as a backlog the size of Montana sitting on my shelves, I didn’t think I’d have time for a long-winded, reportedly brutal dungeon crawler. But I was bored and I love tossing money out my windows, so I bought it.

It’s easily been my best impulse yet this year, and one of my best ever. This game has literally changed the way I see role playing games and what I am now expecting from future renditions in this genre.

3D Dot Game Heroes Coming to America

Posted by Joshiepoo on October 28th, 2009

Hurray! Another wacky Japanese PS3 game is being released in America. No publisher was detailed, but since Sony Computer Entertainment America made the announcement we should consider them the front runner.

I had no idea what this game was about, so I did a little research for you all. It’s a game developed by From Software, makers of Demon’s Souls (which means it will be hard) and takes place in a classic RPG kingdom whose king, following the successful defeat of a demon lord, declares that the world should be in 3D. As you can tell from the picture above something goes horribly wrong and it is your job to find out. Ain’t that always the way?

Review: Demon’s Souls

Posted by Kevin "K-Tuck" Tucker on September 20th, 2009

From Software’s new dungeon-crawling role-playing game Demon’s Souls is a very intense experience. Its combat is brutal and unforgiving, its storyline is complex yet subtle, and its visuals are so darkly-themed that they are borderline haunting. Considering that this game is coming straight out of the eastern side of the globe, the changes From Software made to the traditional JRPG formula with this title are astounding. The pressing question is, though, does the sum of all the odd components in this title equal up to an enjoyable experience?

From Software will have you jumping out of airplanes for their new game - well, ninja style. The Ninja Blade demo starts up showing a very brief cutscene of a group of trained ninjas leaping out of an airplane and then thrusts you into a series of button-matching sequences allowing you to rip your sword through a handful of monsters that we must protect our beloved Tokyo from. As you may know, through a history of gaming I have learned it is a true gamer’s responsibility to uphold the safety of the citizens of Tokyo both now and for years to come. Stay on your toes people, Godzilla is probably plotting his next game…
