GOTY 2010: Stephanie’s Top 5 Picks
Since we don't all play the same games here at Spawn Kill, voting for a unified winner just won't work out and do justice to our favorite games. So a few of us decided to share out Top 5 (and a specialty pick) this week before we're deafened by 2011's sex machine cranking sounds of amazing games to come (like L.A. Noire, clearly). One thing all of my Top 5 picks probably have in common is longevity (and most of them a damn good story) - I like to get my money's worth on top of my blissful pleasure. Most of these shining gems have lasted me hours and hours and hours of enjoyment. So here are my Top 5 Game of the Year picks for 2010.

It's pretty rare to see anyone disagree that Assassin's Creed II heavily surpassed the first game with gameplay tweaks, additions and features. Assassin's Creed was great because of the story and the setting you play in is one we've encountered infrequently in video games so far. Part two just blew me out of the water with how much more fun they made the gameplay. How much more the characters were developed and how much the world really came alive. Brotherhood absolutely does not provide that much of a gameplay upgrade experience-wise, but this is a hell of a good game. It does for the series what Mass Effect 2 did for that series: it sets up the next entry into the series perfectly.

I seem to be one of the few people on the planet who liked the first Assassin's Creed. It sold a boatload of copies, but apparently everyone hated it! It certainly frustrated me. The repetition I could handle. The clunky combat (at times) I could handle. What I could not handle was the fact that about 30 minutes from beating the game it all the sudden became completely unplayable. I've not encountered anything so glitch-ridden in all my years of gaming, even on the PC. I assumed at first it was some story-based deal with the Animus and I was just playing it wrong. After a bit of internet research I found that sadly no, that wasn't it at all. Despite my frustrations with the first game, I was ready for Assassin's Creed 2. I love open world games, even though they're losing their vogue, and I love games that let me put a blade through the back of someone's neck. I also adore Renaissance Italy and paintings of naked women. Assassin's Creed 2 offers all of these things and a whole bunch more. (more...)

If you find that you need an extra $10,000, are handy with a video camera, and are eagerly anticipating Assassin's Creed II (or even if you're not to be honest), then it just might be in your best interest to swing on over to Media Lab Studios' contest page at IFC.com and upload your butchery. Technically it says not to kill someone, but honestly, how are they going to know the difference? I might caution against having such a solid piece of evidence thrown against you at your murder trial, but video proof is so sketchy these days, isn't it? (more...)
