Silent Hill: Past Life Crossover Comic Announced!
At San Diego Comic Con, Tom Waltz of the recently announced Silent Hill 8 team let everyone know that a Silent Hill comic is heading our way! (Luckily the game name Silent Hill 8 is till a tentative title, yugh to out of sequence numerical titles.) It's going to be a crossover with the upcoming game, but there's something kind of strange going on here... See, the comic takes place in 1867, because they wanted to go for a more historical story-telling of the Silent Hill universe. Fine and dandy, but they're planning a crossover character to be in the story where someone from Silent Hill 8 will also be in the comic, Silent Hill: Past Life -- even though the game takes place in a modern setting. I love the craziness of the Silent Hill universe so I'm interested to see what kind of mind-destruction they have planned with this story.

Lately we have seen a renaissance of gaming tie-ins. Tie-ins can include movies, comic books, novels, and even television series. Big publishers like wringing every cent they can from a popular IP, and thankfully this will often bring fans some extra material about the universes that we've fallen in love with. They aren't always done well, but I would argue that there is an increasing movement towards hiring quality writers and artists for these projects, and it has made for some fantastic tie-ins. This will be but a brief overview of a few of the better ones from recent games, with possibly more to come in the future as I expand my own collection.

Felicia Day is a multitalented and industrious woman. Not only is she responsible for the smash hit sitcom The Guild, but she has other equally impressive credits under her belt. She acts, she writes, she produces, and she's setting the world of geek ablaze. As if all of that weren't enough, she's taken her self-described "baby" The Guild to the next level. Back in March, the first issue of the companion comic series to the online show was released, delighting current fans and bringing in several new ones with its all-new prequel to the established narrative. While darker in tone and aesthetic than its real-life counterpart, it presents itself as a pleasing complement that acts a perfect companion to old fans and a great starting point for new ones. It will act as a three-part origin story for The Guildies, and personally I can't wait to see what's to come. (more...)

Not much else needs to be said: Video game films are practically doomed from the start screen, much to the frustration of hundreds of controller-wielding fans.

While we are all waiting to get our hands on the much anticipated Mass Effect 2, lead writer Mac Walters is working hard on creating a brand new story for the Mass Effect universe in the form of a comic book titled Mass Effect: Redemption. The story is exclusive to the comic and will follow a member of Commander Shepard’s team Dr. Liara T’Soni on a “deadly mission of extraordinary importance in Milky Way’s Lawless Terminus System’. Judging from the first few pages the story looks to take place around same time frame as Mass Effect 2. The comic brings with it some veterans to the Sci-Fi space genre with John Jackson Miller (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) handling the scripting and Omar Francia (Star War: Legacy) creating the artwork. Check out the first 7 pages after the cut. (more...)

As video games continue to branch out and unite with other entertainment mediums, it was an exciting announcement to hear that the hot, upcoming genetically-mutated game Prototype would be getting it's own comic series via the impressive duo DC Comics and Sierra Entertainment. Well I booted up Spawn Kill's hype machine and as it was chugging along quite nicely, I decided to venture down to one of my local comic book shops and pick up the first (of what will be a total of six) issue myself to take a look at what seems to set up readers for a bit of a pre-story to the game.
