How does one review a game that is obviously flawed to the point of cracking, yet shows signs of brilliance comparable to some of our best games? I’m going to try, and in that effort I’m honestly going to attempt to convince an audience to play Alpha Protocol. Despite its near overwhelming amount of flaws, I love what this game attempts to, and does, accomplish. Its storytelling and dialogue are top-notch, and though it was delayed a few times, it’s obvious that an extraordinary amount of care was poured into certain aspects of the game that carry it beyond the mediocre and into the must-play category.

Alpha Protocol has been pretty under the radar this year, mostly due to its multiple push-backs, but they released a new trailer today showcasing some of Michael Thorton’s stealthier and hackier moments. I’m going to be straight here and admit that the graphics look a little dated, but that honestly won’t bother me if the game-play is as good as they’ve hinted it might be. I also am a fan of sneaking, and Thorton does plenty of that in the video. Anyway, check it out.

Anyone else notice the completely digital version of Oblivion’s lock-picking system? Also getting a real Hitman vibe from the trailer. Neither of these comparisons is bad! The game hits June 1st (probably).

alpha_protocol_delayRetailers began changing the release date for Sega’s Alpha Protocol last month from its October 6th release to a June 2010 release. Official confirmation only came today, as Sega finally confirmed the game’s delay to spring 2010. Sega Europe managing director Alan Pritchard said that this delay would help place Alpha Protocol in a good release window and give time to improve the game.

Obsidian’s Feargus Urquhart said, “We’re very happy that Sega has made the decision to hold back the shipment of the game in order to give it the best chance at becoming the publishing success that we at Obsidian and our partners at Sega are striving for.”

Alpha Protocol Possibly Delayed

Posted by Jason "IcyStorm" Joo on September 28th, 2009

Sega’s Alpha Protocol may have been delayed from its original October 6th release date to a currently unknown time. GameStop’s US site and Amazon’s Canada site have listed a new release date of June 2010, implying that the game will not drop next week. Obsidian Entertaiment and Sega of America are unfortunately silent at the moment and have not commented on the delay yet.

Alpha Protocol is a third-person action RPG being developed by Obsidian Entertainment. It features a rookie CIA agent that tries to uncover a conspiracy after he is betrayed and wanted by the U.S. government. The game also has a dialogue system with choices based on the “three J.B.s”: James Bond, Jason Bourne, and Jack Bauer. Sega and Obsidian intend to release Alpha Protocol on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows platforms.
