Double Fine Countersues Activision
Posted by K-Tuck on July 23rd, 2009
According to previous news, Activision had filed a suit against Brutal Legend developer Double Fine over who had the right to publish Tim Schafer’s latest video game. With a metaphorical extended middle finger, Double Fine has now countersued Activision, stating that Activision simply wanted to “kill Brutal Legend” in order to protect what is arguably its most popular IP - the Guitar Hero franchise.
The previous conflict was that Brutal Legend was property of Vivendi Games before that company merged with Activision. Activision looked over the list of all the titles being developed, and decided Brutal Legend would be dropped. Electronic Arts then saw a golden opportunity with the title, and opted to publish the game for Double Fine in place of Activision. Like a whiny schoolgirl, Activision sued, claiming that Brutal Legend was their property and tried its hardest to halt the publishing of the game.
Drama! So now Double Fine is looking to sue for damages done by the needless nixing and useless court costs caused by Activision. Hopefully for gamers, Double Fine will win, and instead of being force-fed rehashes of Activision’s most popular titles, we can all enjoy a game that has clearly been a labor of love from several brilliant minds in the industry.
As always, stay tuned to Spawn Kill for more updates on Brutal Legend.
