metal-slug-xx-logoLike to shoot stuff? Like when stuff gets shot by you? Then this trailer might be right in your wheelhouse because it has more bullets than any trailer in the history of video games. Yeah, I said it. You heard it here at Spawn Kill first. There is such a hale of bullets in this trailer that you may need to visit the hospital when you’re through to treat those crossfire wounds.

The trailer features more than just bullets though. It also shows off a bit of EPIC BOSS FIGHTS, lots of co-op multiplayer via the snazzy new adhoc system, and just the game in general. It looks whacky. It looks zany. It looks like it stepped right out of the bowling alley I grew up in. Check out it and prepare to be blown away. Praise be to Atlus.

Heavy Rain Box Art: Juicy

Posted by Snarkasaur on January 12th, 2010

davidcagemainI only say that because it has precipitation on it. Honest. But is it any wonder that they feature the game’s female eye candy up front? Not only is she easy on the eyes, but if a casual consumer were to walk by and spot this cover versus, let’s say, the hideousness that is Mass Effect 2, they might be a little more inclined to choose the pretty dame. It helps that this isn’t some cinematic scene capture or concept art either but the actual game. Yeah. It looks good. Damn good.

Final Fantasy XIII Gets its Own Creepy Van

Posted by Snarkasaur on January 12th, 2010

ffxiii logoI suppose its more of a bus, and it’s probably not so creepy. Players also get to test the game out so I’m mainly just covering up my jealousy with a bit of spite because I don’t live in the San Francisco area (or anywhere remotely interesting). This bus tour kicks off in SanFran on the 13th of January and rolls to a stop on the 16th, giving fans a mere 3 days to hunt the pretty Bay Area streets for their fix of gorgeous RPG. The demo is said to feature never before seen North American gameplay (I’m assuming this means its the chainsaw and monster truck level).

hexyzforce_boxart_promoIt feels good to be an Atlus fan. Where other publishers might disappoint and money-grub, Atlus fans can basically always expect to find something around the corner to look forward to. 2010 brings an announcement no different with a game called Hexyz Force. Hexyz Force is an RPG on the PSP, and that’s rarely a bad thing.

Dark Void Demo Jetpacking onto Consoles

Posted by Snarkasaur on January 5th, 2010

34Capcom has announced today that this very week will see a demo released of their upcoming sci-fi shooter, Dark Void. There’s been much speculation about this title, which boasts cool premises like jetpack combat and appearances from historical badass Nikola Tesla. This week will see hopes or fears compounded as demos generally give a good impression of how a game will play (kind of the point). Not much has been said regarding the demo content, merely that “The teaser level will be a nice introduction to gamers who plan to try out the full game when it ships on January 19, 2009.”

For those out of the loop, Dark Void is a sci-fi shooter “that combines an adrenaline-fueled blend of aerial and ground-pounding combat.” It’s set in an alternate universe in a seemingly Bermuda Triangle sense, and stars a pilot named Will who finds himself unceremoniously dropped into the middle of a war between humans and aliens. The jetpack mechanics certainly sound intriguing, and if done well could provide a whole new method of gameplay for innovation-hungry gamers. And while it’s sci-fi in nature, it’s refreshing that someone has steered away from the space marine formula saturating today’s games.

dark_void_2Releasing this month means that Dark Void finds itself up against some pretty steep competition. That’s a bit of an understatement. With games like Bayonetta, Mass Effect 2, and No More Heroes 2, Dark Void needs to be better than sliced bread stand a chance at any decent sales numbers. Capcom has been knocking things out of the park lately though, so it’s entirely possible. And people always appreciate the chance to test out new intellectual properties.

Regardless, the demo hits Xbox Live on Wednesday, January 6th (that’s tomorrow!), and PSN on Thursday January 7th. Feel free to check it out and give us your thoughts!

A Dragon Age Expansion Approaches!

Posted by Snarkasaur on January 5th, 2010

screenshot_04In near record time, BioWare has already announced an expansion for Dragon Age titled, Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening. A bit awkward as far as titles go, but I don’t care. It’s an expansion. For Dragon Age. With DLC for the game scheduled for release this very day being postponed, this comes as more than welcome news to potentially disappointed fans.

Awakening’s story takes place, obviously, after the events of Dragon Age. Players take control of either their own created protagonist from the original campaign, or an entirely new character, either of which assumes the title of Grey Warden Commander. They are tasked with reforming the Wardens and finding out just why the darkspawn are refusing to disappear. One would assume slaying an Archdemon would take care of it, but apparently that’s just not enough for some races! Awakening takes places in a new land called Amaranthine, and features such cryptic characters as The Architect, a Grey Warden base titled Vigil’s Keep which sounds as though it will be fully upgradeable, and five new non-player characters to interact and bond with. Apparently an old friend will make an appearance too, but they’re keeping tight-lipped about who that’s going to be. I’d put my money on Zevran, but my heart would be hoping Morrigan. Players also gain access to a higher level cap, more skills and spells, and even the ability to respecialize points.

For anyone who has yet to experience the pleasure of a BioWare expansion, I can assure any doubters that this will be well worth the cost. The expansion to Baldur’s Gate 2, while maybe not as wonderful as the original campaign, was substantial to say the least and definitely closed up the narrative. Given Bioware’s tendency to go above and beyond, I honestly expect even more out of this despite the quick release. Yes, it is quick, with an announced release date of March 16th. This makes Valve’s latest expansion pack release seem long by comparison.

I honestly don’t think the Bioware chaps sleep. They started out in medical technology or something so my guess is that they’ve developed some kind of bionic method of keeping themselves awake and sustained for years at a time. It’s the only explanation for their ridiculous workload.

A few precious screenshots from the expansion below for your perusal!

Foto+Sky+Crawlers_+Innocent+Aces,+TheI hadn’t even heard of this game until the press release popped up into my inbox, but XSEED is apparently releasing a flight simulator, a term that should probably be used loosely so as not to offend the diehard flight sim enthusiasts that have ruled PC skies for years. I say this because The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces is a Wii game that uses motion controls to enact an anime-style flight experience.

The story is actually pretty interesting, at least on paper. It features a country finally at peace after decades of war. Unfortunately, as so often happens in reality, the masses aren’t satisfied with peace and so the government creates a program of sponsored dogfighting, with corporations competing against one another using military personel as their champions. Players begin as a rookie pilot codenamed “Lynx” who works his way up through the ranks and quite obviously starts uncovering some nasty government secrets.

The gameplay features the Wii remote acting as a throttle, which will accelerate or deccelerate their plane, and the nunchuck as a flight control stick, tilted to roll, pitch, and yaw. The idea sounds fun, but whether it will work to simulate anything resembling entertaining flight is questionable. The team working on the controls, Project ACES, are responsible for the Ace Combat series of similar games that have been popular in Japan for years (there are currently 10 of them in the series), but have also gathered a smaller following here in the states. The games are well received by critics and players alike, so look for this to make waves as well. Its debut on Nintendo’s money maker has the potential to wow or completely disappoint, as most games on the Wii seem to do.

The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces has a release date of January 12, 2010, which should render it completely obscure even if it does prove full of awesome given the competition of January. Check out the video below, and head to http://www.skycrawlersinnocentaces.com/ for some interesting tutorials that attempt to explain the controls.

Pandemic Studios might be down but they certainly aren’t out. Just a week after the announcement of Pandemic Studios merging with EALA, they announced today an all-new game in the Mercenaries franchise. Dubbed ‘Mercs Inc’ (working title) is in the early stages of development and will be the first Pandemic game to be developed at the new Playa Vista office. This title will be the latest entry in the action series made popular by Mercenaries in 2005 and more recently Mercenaries 2: World of Flames which released to mixed reviews. This will also be the first title released after the launch of the World War II action-sandbox game The Saboteur.

“We are very excited to announce a new installment in the popular Mercenaries series because it demonstrates our continued commitment to Pandemic’s rich catalogue of intellectual properties,” said Nick Earl, Senior VP and Group General Manager at EA. “From the studio at EALA, a core creative team is forging new ground and conceptualizing new ideas for this exciting franchise.”

I’ve been a big fan of Pandemic Studios so it’s good to hear that they are working on another title. Let’s just hope that it doesn’t share the same issues that Mercenaries 2 did.

kaneandlynchThis news is straight out of Copenhagen, people. So listen up.

IO Interactive has officially announced that Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days, will be forthcoming on Xbox 360s, PS3s and PCs around the globe some time in 2010, though the exact date is unspecified as yet. Kane and Lynch will be trotting around Shanghai this time, doing what criminals do best, and IO promises a more intense and gritty experience than ever before. The developers have hinted that they’re looking to make the experience more documentary-themed, throwing around words like intensity and realism. Whether this means slapping on a grit texture a la WET, or something better is hard to glean. Here’s hoping it won’t just mean a bouncy camera because most of us have had quite enough of that, thanks.

Blizzcon 2010: VIVA, LAS VEGAS!

Posted by Astrella on November 12th, 2009

I wasn’t expecting to hear about this until around March of next year, but apparently BlizzCon 2010 plans are already set… kind of. Today, WoW.com discovered that the Las Vegas Convention Center calendar lists BlizzCon as one of their events on July 30 and 31st of next year. Apparently, the convention center is confirming the dates, but Blizzard is telling fans to not book your vacations just yet because nothing is set in stone.

This comes as quite a surprise to me because every past BlizzCon has been held in California’s Anaheim Convention Center in August. It is pretty exciting to see BlizzCon in a new venue. Hopefully, it will be more accommodating to their 20,000 plus fans than the California venue. Vegas and Blizzard is a very nice combination, and I think a great idea on Blizzard’s part! I’ve never been to a BlizzCon, but fans of Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft, and/or World of Warcraft should definitely attempt to get tickets if able to. It’s sure to be an epic event!

A game that once was a Xbox 360 exclusive arcade title and quickly became one of the highest rated, best-selling games on XBLA is finally making it’s way over to the PlayStation 3. Sony officially announced that Braid will be making its debt on the PlayStation Network on November 12 for $14.99. This platformer/puzzler blew critics and fans away with it’s unique gameplay, receiving a Metacritc score of 93 and becoming the second-best-selling title on XBLA for 2008. It’s been over a year but I’m sure PlayStation fans can’t wait to play this game. Check out the new trailer released today.

3D Dot Game Heroes Coming to America

Posted by Joshiepoo on October 28th, 2009

Hurray! Another wacky Japanese PS3 game is being released in America. Yesterday via Sony’s PlayStation twitter and Siliconera we got confirmation on the rumor that 3D Dot Game Heroes will be coming out in North America for the PlayStation 3. No publisher was detailed, but since Sony Computer Entertainment America made the announcement we should consider them the front runner.

I had no idea what this game was about, so I did a little research for you all. It’s a game developed by From Software, makers of Demon’s Souls (which means it will be hard) and takes place in a classic RPG kingdom whose king, following the successful defeat of a demon lord, declares that the world should be in 3D. As you can tell from the picture above something goes horribly wrong and it is your job to find out. Ain’t that always the way?

EA Sports Announces Madden NFL Arcade

Posted by The Herp on October 15th, 2009

As soon as Madden NFL 10 was released in August, EA was quick to announce they were working on an arcade version of the storied franchise. The title was said to be similar to the 3vs3 NHL game that was released on XBLA and the PlayStation store. Today EA officially announced the new game titled Madden NFL Arcade. The arcade title will be a 5-on-5 football game that features a unique art style and much faster paced gameplay. Just like the NHL title, the game will be available as a downloadable title on the 360 and PS3, and will cost 1200 Microsoft points or $14.99. The game is being made by EA Tiburon, the same company that makes all the Madden titles, and is set for a December release date.

Although fans in the United States have to wait another two weeks to get their hands on EA’s next installment in the FIFA series, Europe has had it since October 2nd. Since then 1.7 million copies of FIFA 10 were sold. This sets a record for the fastest selling sports game ever in Europe and it hasn’t even been a full week yet. The game has hit the number one spot on the UK charts across all platforms and will likely remain at the top with Pro Evolution 2010 still a couple of weeks away.
