Bulletstorm Demo Impressions Thumbnail

Bulletstorm Demo Impressions

First person shooters are like action movies: they’re flashy, lacking in substance, and you can’t walk down a hallway without tripping on one these days. Occasionally, you’ll find a Matrix or a 300 in titles like BioShock or Deus Ex, but the majority of them are your typical Van Damme or Stallone flicks. Bulletstorm, at first glance, would appear to be the latter. It’s flashy to the point of comedy, but carries a distinct humor and a unique gimmick that you will not find in most shooters. With the release of the demo this week on the PSN and XBLA, I sat down with the game and tried to determine if the insane people over at People Can Fly have a winner on their hands, or just another short-lived firecracker.

Re-Mastering Metal Gear Solid: A Wish List Thumbnail

Re-Mastering Metal Gear Solid: A Wish List

The interweb is a-buzz this week with rumors of a remastered Metal Gear Solid pack featuring the first three games of the series, currently in the works for the PlayStation 3. Being a humongous fan of the series since its re-emergence on the original PlayStation, and having just had earnest discussions about a potential remastery, this news struck many delicious chords in my gamer-soul. I love re-playing classic games, but living in an HD world makes it painful to do so. Games also feels very different from when returning to them years later, and advances in controls and technology often render the old ways obsolete. With all this is mind, I decided to lay out what I, personally, would love to see from this remastery of a pack of masterful games.

Ser Isaac of Clarke’s Armor in Dragon Age 2

There are many things that can be said of the Dead Space franchise, but I think most people can agree that Isaac Clarke's space-suit is among the most impressive looking in sci-fi history. The marketing folks at EA are capitalizing on this cool-factor by giving Dragon Age fans even more incentive to buy Dead Space 2, released next Tuesday. Packaged in early copies of the game are codes for downloadable armor in Dragon Age 2, which comes out in March.

Every Kratos Kill Ever: Ghost of Sparta Thumbnail

Every Kratos Kill Ever: Ghost of Sparta

Ghost of Sparta marks the second outing of Kratos on the small screen, and despite its miniature status, it packs a wallop in terms of sheer quality, both in gameplay and storytelling. Timeline-wise, it's set between the first God of War and God of War II. Ares is dead, and Kratos is out looking for answers. His dreams haunt him, telling him he needs to find his long-lost brother Deimos. To do this, he returns to areas from his past, finding (and killing!) his mother and even brashly striding through the streets of Sparta as the new god of war. Spoilers, be warned!

GOTY 2010: Dave’s Top 5 Picks Thumbnail

GOTY 2010: Dave’s Top 5 Picks

If you had asked me in 2009 if 2010 could possibly be any better, I might have laughed. 2009 was a landmark year featuring some of the best games of the decade. 2010 came along as an underdog, and boxed its way right into contention with a slew of amazing titles, some obscure but excellent and others completely obvious but equally excellent. To even whittle my game of the year choices to five seems insulting, and so in a way this list isn't necessarily my five favorite games of the year, but five that I believe deserve the recognition as games of their year.

Review: Dead Rising 2: Case West Thumbnail

Review: Dead Rising 2: Case West

If the end of Dead Rising 2 left you with nothing but more questions and a burning desire to see what's in store for our hero Chuck Greene, Capcom has come to your rescue with a new Case. Dead Rising 2: Case West sees the return of the main character from Dead Rising, Frank West, and while players are not able to use him (outside of co-op), it’s still heart-warming to see an old face in the new Dead Rising skin. To many fans of the series, Frank West is Dead Rising. This reporter turned zombie-slayer made an impression on the gaming world with his debut, and Capcom did their best to cement that impression by promoting him, even plugging him into some of their “vs.” fighting games. Cast West, then, is a fan-service of sorts that brings back a beloved character and also impels Greene's story of Dead Rising 2 even further.

Every Kratos Kill Ever: God of War III

God of War III marks the end of the Kratos myth. He gets a prequel with God of War: Ghost of Sparta, which will be next in the lineup of editorials featuring all of Kratos' kills, but God of War III is his true end. There's certainly speculation about another installment, and people coming back from the dead in Greek mythology is hardly unheard of, but as per right now, it's over. We shouldn't plan to see our Spartan warrior again, but neither should we be surprised if we do. God of War III also features the single longest list of kills of any of the games, as well as the most impressive as Kratos tackles the entire Pantheon, killing the top three gods and all their cronies. And as with every other game, he starts off the butchery with a big bang.

Great Characters in Gaming: The Next Generation Thumbnail

Great Characters in Gaming: The Next Generation

After nearly a year long hiatus, Great Characters in Gaming is back with a version befitting our current generation of consoles (which are for some reason still dubbed next-gen). This list follows the familiar format, but every character here is from a game released within the last two years, with one exception who made his debut back in 2007. Characters featured in games these days need to bring more to the table than those of previous generations. In the 80s, we were content with some pixels and a jump button. The 90s saw a shift to a more character-driven gaming experience, but still lacked voice acting and quality dialog to speak. It wasn't until the last decade (2000-2010) that we started seeing real effort put into character development, and the last five years in particular have seen a boom of believable players to star in the best of games. Top notch voice acting combined with detailed writing has yielded us some memorable people, and below are just a few that I personally have found particularly wonderful.

Review: Ys: The Oath in Felghana Thumbnail

Review: Ys: The Oath in Felghana

I've rarely heard anyone speak of the SNES Action-RPG Ys III: Wanderers of Ys with fond memories because I think overall, it just wasn't that good of a game. This begs a certain question though: why remake it? Or better yet, why remake it twice? Ys: The Oath in Felghana is in fact the PSP remake of that original game, which had already been remade for the PC five years ago. I won't pretend to understand the decision making process behind it all, but I'm honestly impressed at Xseed and Falcom's sheer gumption, and it's paid off because this new Ys is one worth playing.
