Review: Hydrophobia Thumbnail

Review: Hydrophobia

Hydrophobia is an abnormal fear of water. Hydrophobia, the XBLA title from Dark Energy Digital? It’s a confusing combination of Bioshock, Resident Evil, and Tomb Raider. As a long-standing gamer, Hydrophobia echoed something ingenious for three-years in the making—a universal fear and loathing of a video game level designed around H2O. This is what its title should’ve implied, but didn’t.

CCP and White Wolf Convene for Vampire MMO

Not too long ago, fellow SpawnKill staffer Dana instinctively knew who to inform first regarding the Grand Masquerade; naturally, it was I. Unfortunately, it was a bit too late to pack my bags for Louisiana and disappointment set in. So, now you’re probably wondering what in the name of WoD am I speaking of. To read more about this event taking place in none other than New Orleans, you can go here: http://www.thegrandmasquerade.com/. In précis, White Wolf is holding a once-in-a-lifetime assembly for a few nights of mischief specifically with World of Darkness fans in mind.

DMC5 to be “Western Friendly” and Kamiya Not Happy

It must be hard being a mother and watching your son mature, especially when your son is Dante and your ex waltzes into your home and kidnaps him for a day at Fantastic Sams without your consent. This week, a very capable developer known as Ninja Theory verified that the industry is totally losing it’s OG swagger and resorting to a very Hollywood approach; “Let’s make another version of a game that hasn’t even had a chance to feel outdated because Dante, an iconic character, is hurting for a cut and color,” they've convinced themselves.

Devil May Cry Re-boot: New Devilish “Do” for Dante? Thumbnail

Devil May Cry Re-boot: New Devilish “Do” for Dante?

Heavenly Sword was my first Playstation 3 title and it still remains one of my favorites, so when 'twas announced at Capcom's Pre-TGS press conference that game developer Ninja Theory snatched-up the opportunity to "re-boot" Devil May Cry, I... wait, what? Little is known about this upcoming "re-boot," except there are many people, including myself, scoffing at the dark-haired dude sporting a maroon trench coat similar to our favorite demon-exterminator, Dante. If we take the word "re-boot" literally, it very well could be Dante.

First Impressions: OnLive, Nice To Make Your Acquaintance

Who would’ve ever thought “cloud” gaming was so close to reality? Yeah, Steam allows us to purchase games on the fly, but imagine something better. Is it too good to be true? It’s hard to say. I never thought I’d see Mass Effect on the iPhone, after all. Since its release, OnLive has gotten a ton of attention—while there has been a group of naysayers clinging to the very idea of Onlive, some people have been very happy with the outcome.

Descend Into Madness with Amnesia: The Dark Descent

“If you love horror, there's no two ways about it: you must play Amnesia,” says Neoseeker on behalf of Frictional Games new survival-horror game, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The release date was announced on the titles home page yesterday and the game can now be downloaded via Steam, Direct2Drive, etc. Amnesia's scores have been setting the roof ablaze thus far, with IGN giving it a solid 8.5 and Game Informer handing out an A with most of the commentary praising Amnesia on it's originality and genuine scare factor---something the Survival Horror genre has been skimping out on lately, I find.

Worldwide Release Brought to You by LittleBigPlanet

Hear, hear. Sackboy will be up and at ‘em on November 16th, an officially announced release date for LittleBigPlanet 2 with the Japan release date hopefully following closely behind—particularly November 18th which is listed albeit unconfirmed. The September 2nd unveiling of the game was a bit silly, as the Japanese word “amimono,” meaning the act of knitting or knitted items, was left in the URL of this freaky website. Well, he finally stopped knitting and we're now left with the official Japanese website for LittleBigPlanet 2, here. Here are some features that have been announced along with the release date:

Duke Nukem Will Rise Again in 2011

"Duke can't die!" Did you run out of gum while you were attempting to kick alien ass? Back in 1997, the cool kids behind first-person shooter Nukem 3D probably ran out of both gas and gum however, it’s now but a temporary state of chewing dormancy; via Twitter, 2K confirmed that 2011 and Gearbox Software will resuscitate Duke Nukem in Duke Nukem Forever.

Medal of Honor Banned on U.S. Military Bases Thumbnail

Medal of Honor Banned on U.S. Military Bases

The FPS genre continues to draw negative attention as far as morality is concerned, particularly in relation to Medal of Honor, a game that’s been rather boastful of its current significance to both American and foreign military soldiers alike. The player will have a chance to kill people in Afghanistan, no doubt, but the ability to play as the Taliban is apparently where many Americans, particularly mothers, draw the line of ethics: "How can they say it's OK for someone to play the Taliban? You'll have people sitting at home, drinking beer, shooting at American soldiers, maybe missing, then starting over. Well, Ken didn't have a chance to start over," said Karen Meredith on behalf of her son.

The Witcher 2 Will Dodge Conventional RPG Morality Thumbnail

The Witcher 2 Will Dodge Conventional RPG Morality

Is morality a black and white issue? Senior Producer on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Tomasz Gop, clearly explains the game will not be heading down the conventional “good versus evil” path familiar to Mass Effect and will instead draw inspiration directly from award-winning Polish fantasy writer and short-story author of The Witcher, Andrzej Sapkowski; Geralt, the main character of The Witcher, operates on his own moral code in an ethically hazy universe or in “grey areas,” so to speak and Gop wants The Witcher 2 to closely resemble the novel in this regard. Also, The Witcher likes boobies.
