Review: Sonic Colors

For a mere hedgehog, Sonic sure seems to find himself in a lot of perilous situations. One must wonder if he doesn't go looking for trouble, seeing as how he finds himself in it on quite a consistent basis. I personally think Sonic secretly enjoys the trouble he finds, and feeds off the adrenaline rush he gets from risking his life. Sonic Colors puts our favorite blue hedgehog in the path of the criminally insane Dr. Eggman, with the hope Sonic can once again save the day. So is the day worth saving this time around?

Review: Crossfire 2 Thumbnail

Review: Crossfire 2

If you've been paying any attention to the Xbox Live “Indie Games Winter Uprising” showcase, then you've probably noticed that a majority of the games are a take on titles and/or genres from the past. Crossfire 2 is no exception, and yet it plays like a new game should, offering something new and exciting over it's predecessor and the game it was modeled after. So while the Crossfire series may play like a Space Invaders clone on steroids, Crossfire 2 offers enough innovation to avoid labeling itself a ripoff. The question is, does Crossfire 2 defend against the ever invading indie/clone pitfalls so many other shmups seem to run into, or does it crash and burn like the rest?

Review: Soulcaster II Thumbnail

Review: Soulcaster II

From it's inception, there have always been RPGs and Tower Defense games in the Xbox Live Marketplace. The folks at MagicalTimeBean have yet again mashed up the two very popular genres in hopes of further improving upon the Soulcaster series. Soulcaster II is still the same RPG/tower defense game its predecessor was, but with a few welcome improvements. If the tower-rpg-defense genre takes off, it will be because Soulcaster II has laid the foundation with an incredibly entertaining game.

Yet Another Haunting Trailer for Homefront Thumbnail

Yet Another Haunting Trailer for Homefront

I don't know what it is about these trailers, but the folks over at THQ have managed to release yet another bone chilling video for their upcoming alternate "future-reality" first person shooter Homefront. Perhaps it's the fact that the scenario is a very eerie look into America's possible future, or perhaps it's the fact that this storyline is a fresh one that hits close to home (regardless of your nationality). With flashes of in-game footage and some real-life news reels, the "Occupation" trailer covers a bit of what the campaign is going to be like while still leaving enough of the story hidden to keep viewers interested and excited.

Now through December 31, Amazon customers can receive an introductory subscription to any of the following magazines for half their normal subscription price: Nintendo Power, PC Gamer, The Official Xbox Magazine, and The Official PlayStation Magazine. In a time when print seems to be dying, and folks are still tightening their belts due to a recessed economy, this is a welcomed bonus for anyone who likes having a physical subscription based product. Just in time for the holiday season, this looks like a great monthly stocking stuffer for the gamers on your list.

Review: Asteroids Do Concern Me

Every so often a game is released which defies genre classification, and Asteroids Do Concern Me just so happens to be one such game. For reasons I'll cover later, the game seems to skirt every label imaginable and forces me both as a player and a writer to come up with an exclusive descriptor to try to quantify my experience with the game. The simplest title I can give Asteroids Do Concern Me is: “side-scrolling asteroid dodger”. While it's not the prettiest, of descriptions I think it pretty much sums up the entire game, which doesn't bode well for the game's depth.

Review: Ubergridder

Have you ever played Pac-Man and thought to yourself, “this would totally be better if it were set in space”? Well the folks at BadgerPunch Games did when setting out to create the game Ubergridder. The game asks players to take on the role of a defenseless robot on a mission to repair a spaceship and its wires while avoiding menacing monsters chasing it around a wiring grid. Is Ubergridder worth the trip out into the vacuum of space?

Review: Epic Dungeon Thumbnail

Review: Epic Dungeon

There's a certain formula needed to create a successful roguelike title, this formula has been used since the mid-eighties and hasn't changed much over time. With simple tile graphics, random map configurations and precious loot drops, roguelikes are easy to craft, yet difficult to perfect. Fans of the genre will find the roguelike formula put to surprisingly good use with the indie game Epic Dungeon for the Xbox 360. If you like whittling down hundreds of regenerating enemies, collecting sweet loot, and you fear permanent, game-restarting death, then you might be ready for Epic Dungeon.
