ALT+F4: Cars, Guns, and LucasArts

Neotokyo - LogoAnother Monday mercilessly lands directly on top of me, luckily, it brings some interesting stuff with it. Codemasters is going to be holding off the PC release of DiRT 2, to add DX11 support. The Half-Life 2 modification NEOTOKYO° released over the weekend and turned out incredibly awesome, it’s about as much as you can hope for when you’re paying an entry fee of $0. The most impressive piece of news so far, today, is that Lucasarts is bringing over a large amount of their games to Steam in waves.

Check it all out, after the jump.

Codemasters Cleans up DiRT 2.

Codemasters is going to be delaying the release of the much anticipated DiRT 2 until December 2009. The reason cited for this delay is so that they can integrate DX11. Oh joy!

“As a leader in digital racing entertainment, we are staying ahead of the pack by immediately taking advantage of key new technologies such as hardware tessellation, multi-threading and Shader Model 5.0 to deliver the most realistic, immersive and exhilarating racing experiences in the business.”

I can’t help but feel anything but irritation in regards to this. In their press release they specifically say that DX11 hardware isn’t expected to roll out until the late half of 2009 the percentage of people benefiting from this doesn’t even begin to approach the amount that just have to sit on their hands a little longer. While I remain a staunch late adopter, in that I prefer to grab awesome budget conscious card like a 4850 or what have you when they’re available on the cheap.

While I’m sure this will pay off in the lifespan of the game, assuming it’s a long one, I’d much rather be able to play it at the same time console gamers will.

NEOTOKYO° Uncloaks

The long awaited Half-Life 2 modification, NEOTOKYO° has at long last been released. The game plays like a science-fiction Counter-Strike with some gameplay additions. Players can choose between three different armor types, all having an effect on your movement speed, survivability, and available weapons. The overall objective in the one and only gametype is to retrieve the “ghost”, a portion of an android that allows the carrying player to identify where the enemy team is on the map.

The mod is incredibly polished, although it isn’t without some flaws. Leaning is hit or miss, but mostly works, when it wants to. There’s an absolutely fantastic soundtrack behind the game that for some reason doesn’t play at all, which is incredibly unfortunate.

Overall, if you’re looking to get some fantastically fun multiplayer gaming in and already own a Source engine game, excluding HL2DM and Lost Coast, then I suggest grabbing NEOTOKYO° and giving it a go. The artwork is fantastic, gameplay feels smooth and polished, and there’s quite a few people playing. I’ve already sunk nearly 9 hours into this thing myself; hope to see you out there.

LucasArts gets Steamy

LucasArts announces today that they plan to bring some of their previous releases onto digital distributor Steam. The first wave, which goes live July 8th, this Wednesday, is going to be part of a non-specified number of waves coming out. Check out the list of everything dropping this Wednesday.

  • Armed and Dangerous
  • Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
  • LEGO® Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
  • LOOM
  • Star Wars Battlefront II
  • Star Wars Republic Commando
  • Star Wars Starfighter
  • The Dig
  • Thrillville: Off the Rails

The press release then goes on to announce that tomorrow is going to bring the premier of the new Tales of Monkey Island, which conflicts with my studying and research paper writing, jerks. They take it up another notch July 15th, when the remake of the original The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition goes live.

My productivity levels should shortly plummet from mediocre to non-existent.

The press release is available for all to read, right here.

I was expecting good games, like Grim Fandango…not that there aren't some good games in this list, just thought they would release the epics.

Well, it's only the first wave. What else they have coming down the pipes is yet to be seen.

Hopefully DX11 will bring a standard physics API with support for Stream Processing on Nvidia and ATI cards (dating back to the GeForce 8 series and Radeon X1600 ). I really would like to see realism increase in games, they are so stiff and boring for the most part.
