The Witcher 2 Pre-order Details and DRM-Free GOG Deal

When CD Projekt RED held a live conference, they gave out a lot of information regarding their PC title The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings set to release on May 17th. This ranged from what pre-order bonuses would be, where you could pre-order the game, and the confirmation of the Collector’s Edition details. To see images and videos of the editions of The Witcher 2, visit the official site here.

Customers will have the choice between two editions: Retail Premium Edition, which is considered the “normal” edition, and the Collector’s Edition. Included with the Retail Premium Edition is a soundtrack disc, “making of” disc, manual, map, game guide, a pamphlet representation of an in-game item, two papercraft sheets, and a coin. The Digital version of this edition will include all of this in digital form, minus the coin. Price is set at $49.95, £34.95 or €49,95.

As for the Collector’s Edition, it includes so much that it comes in a giant box. Along with what comes in the Premium Edition, this edition also offers a special DLC jacket that boosts Geralt’s techniques, a computer-generated statue of Geralt’s head, a 200-page glossy hardcover artbook, a deck of The Witcher 2 playing cards, and three stickers. Though a price was not announced by CD Projekt RED, it was confirmed that retail value will be $129.95 for the US and be available for pre-order via GameStop and Amazon.

The pre-order bonuses will vary by store and each store will have a different DLC deal. As the release date draws closer, the list of all deals and partners will be announced. There is a list where you can see all the DLC pre-order bonuses for each country. Currently in the US, the partners are GameStop and Amazon.com. For those who pre-order The Witcher 2 on Steam, they will receive 10% off the Digital Premium Edition along with the standard Steamcloud saves and achievements. GOG.com customers will be able to purchase the game at the same price, and GOG will offer a completely DRM-free version. Not only do customers get the DRM-free version, but GOG gives you the choice of one of five different bonus RPGs: Gothic 2 Gold, Realms of Arkania 1 + 2 (counts as one game), Realms of Arkania 3, Divine Divinity, or Beyond Divinity.

Along with all of these, GOG also will offer four songs that did not make it into the game’s soundtrack, 10 avatars for GOG.com forums, 10 HD wallpapers, and a photo tour of the CD Projekt RED offices. It’s also worth mentioning that when you purchase through GOG, you get all this immediately but won’t be charged until the game is released. The remainder of the conference showcased a demo of gameplay that had previously been shown at Eurogamer Expo.

  • Although the Collector’s version is nice, it’s awfully expensive, and what am I going to do with that silly bust?

The GOG deal seems like one of the best right now; even though I normally would prefer a retail copy, the prospect of DRM-free is really nice, and it does make me wonder what kind of DRM the retail copy is going to use…

It is nice to see that the “regular” version will have some nice bonuses, though.
