Preceding the massive Kinect launch, Microsoft started rolling out changes to both their Xbox 360 Dashboard and pricing tiers for their Xbox Live Gold service. Starting with the revamped Dashboard, Microsoft has launched a new ESPN3 app, “streamlined” functionality, and an improved voice codec surely aimed at all the people that will be using their Kinects to chat with friends. Along with these changes came a higher price scheme for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Microsoft’s defense of said price hike was a simple, “we need more server space to provide you exclusive content” (like ESPN3).

These changes leave a lot of subscribers wondering if they’re indeed “worth it.” I personally think so, seeing as how I do plan on getting a Kinect, and have already used my ESPN3 app to check scores and get news without having to change the channel. That being said, the cost increase seems a little bit much. Microsoft is a tech company and should in theory be able to provide said content without too much stress on their resources. It almost feels like they’re lying just to cover their butts as people begin to express their frustrations with the higher prices.

Enough about what I think, I’m more curious to see what you, the reader, think. Do you like the new content? Does said content justify the price increase? Sound off and let your voices be heard!

I still haven’t updated mine. I’ve been hearing too many bad things lol. But I guess I will have to update eventually…

You will have to update if you ever want to play online :) The problems I had with mine seem to have gone away, and now that I’m used to the new feel of it… I think I prefer it over the old one.

I’m actually a little pissed at the price increase - but at the same time, they’ve had it at $50 for years and years now, through all the features and updates that have been added since the original Xbox was still in service. Now with all the user install base increases every year and the features they’ve rolled out since Xbox Live first came to be - it really has been a lot and it still has features that I use every day that I can’t STILL on my PS3 (Party chat, wow… still?). If I have to go on Skype on my computer to voice chat while playing a game on my TV via PS3 if I want to talk with a group of friends online - that’s some caveman shit.

The look of the dashboard though I’m still back and forth with, I do like the slick square look to it, but there’s so much white it’s almost blinding at times. It’ll take some getting used to. Anyone still miss the blades? :(

I don’t have a LIVE subscription, so I can’t play online. But I suppose I’d need to if I wanted to download anything new.

I welcome this price change (I kid). Here in Canada we’ve been paying that extra $10 since the start of XBL in Canada. With the changes they’ve made and the US/Canadian Dollar, it was only fair to either increase your price, or lower ours.

Honestly XBL is worth the little extra money. Over the year, you won’t even notice $10. I mean when you compare it to the Wii’s service and the PS3, there’s no comparison. People will argue there is, but the online for the PS3 is just slow, downloads are much slower, and even with their premium service, it still lacks many features included in XBL.

    Just my 2 cents.

I firmly believe the $10 extra a year for Xbox Live isn’t necessarily a cost recovery measure for ESPN3 and Video Kinect, as much as it is a clever marketing decision. But Chris, you’ll say, how is an Xbox Live upcharge clever? The answer, dear Spawn Killers, is simple: the more Microsoft charges for an individual Xbox Live Gold subscription, the more attractive the family pack becomes. After all, who would pay $60 for one XBL sub, when you could pay $100 for four of them?

Good point. I also have wondered, especially with the recent renaming of the “silver” account to “free” account, if they will be introducing a third tier in between silver and gold.

So you would have to pay $60 for each account you want to use to play online with the 360? Man… The family pack does look good.

Exactly what I was getting at - and you know Microsoft is capitalizing on this.

That happened to me when I first updated, try shutting off your xbox and waiting a few minutes. It should all come back.

I hate the new dashboard, it looks cheap! I hate the “improved” voice chat cause it sounds terrible!!! sounds worse than a PS3 bluetooth heaadseat, it sounds like the other person has a cold, it really does. sounds like they have a cold and they’re talking into a cup. All these updates don’t mean anything to me, tbh. Netflix with all the same functions on the PS3 for free, hulu is already on PS3, what am i paying for XBL then? Party Chat? ESPN3?(which is actually kind of nice lol) and then what? An avatar? I used to think i was paying for XBL because their online service was more stable than on the PS3, but it’s not. Online play for both consoles is the same and anyone who tells you different hasn’t spent time on both consoles.

    very good point

But you pay for both PSN and XBL, what are you complaining about on that there soapbox?
