To be honest, I’d almost begun to think North America wasn’t going to see a DSi price drop. While other countries saw the price fall, ours had remained steady throughout the summer, with no indication that Nintendo would lower either the DSi or DSi XL MSRPs any time soon. However, today Nintendo made it official: the DSi will now retail for $149.99, and the DSi XL for $169.99: a $20 drop.

Although the press release didn’t make it clear as to when these prices are meant to take effect, my guess would be immediately. However, as of this writing, Amazon still had both devices listed at the older, higher prices. The DS Lite, however, will remain at $129.99.

“We know shoppers want to get the maximum value out of every dollar they spend,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Our new Nintendo DSi prices make it easier than ever for consumers to access the tremendous variety of games, applications and social tools on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL systems.”

My hope is these price drops are indicative of the upcoming 3DS release date announcement; both that the new device will launch in the US sooner rather that later, and hopefully for $199.99 or less.

Update: Looks like these new prices take effect September 12, 2010. So you might want to hold out a couple of weeks for that shiny new DSi.

Hmm, you know…I really find the XL appealing but I still won't buy it knowing that the 3DS is on the horizon.

My husband surprised me with one a few months ago and I just love it. :) I almost never use my DS Lite anymore.
