BioWare fans, you know one of the big disappointments of E3 was the lack of any news about the sequel to Dragon Age: Origins. Never fear, friends, for today BioWare has revealed Dragon Age II. As usual, Game Informer has snagged the exclusive 10-page reveal, and those of us who don’t subscribe (or don’t have a GameStop nearby) will be forced to suffice with the bare-bones webpage BioWare has provided, which you can find here. According to the page, a debut trailer will be released August 17, and those of you with an EA/Bioware account can sign up to be “reminded” - and, I’m hoping, also get emails about other updates related to the game.

The site also includes (besides some epic art decorating it) two pieces of concept art and a brief description of the upcoming game, which definitely has a Fable III-esque (albeit darker) vibe:

“You are one of the few who escaped the destruction of your home. Now, forced to fight for survival in an ever-changing world, you must gather the deadliest of allies, amass fame and fortune, and seal your place in history. This is the story of how the world changed forever. The legend of your Rise to Power begins now.”

The site further elaborates that the new game will be set in another part of the world (presumably, not Ferelden), and will encapsulate a span of ten years. The site also promises “dynamic new combat mechanics” and an “entirely new cinematic experience” plus “updated graphics” and a new “visual style.” Whether this means we’ll see something a bit more stylistic (as the concept art currently suggests), we’ll have to wait and see.

GameStop already has the game listed for pre-order for PC, PS3, and 360 with a release date of February 1, 2026 (remember that date?). However, no official release date has been set. As BioWare reveals more about the game, I’m sure we will see a limited or collector’s edition, so you may want to hold out until then. As always, Spawn Kill will keep you updated as more information is revealed.

Been some more details released via Game Informer. Apparently you do import your save file, and your actions from the first game help shape the world events of the second. So while you don't play the same character, you do see his or her actions and the affect they've had on the world.

Oh, ok, well that does make some sense, esp depending on how many years its been since the first game. I still wish they gave you a bit more flexibility in choosing the MC in terms of race, for example, but I'm hopeful. Do you have the copy of Game Informer already, or did you read this somewhere? I was hoping it had already come out (I don't subscribe) but they didn't have it yet at Gamestop when I was there yesterday. :(

*sigh* and a really early release date too, great.

I don't know... It's really vague anyway to make much of. You ended the Blight in part one, so I doubt that will be the problem in part 2. I'm not sure what the fame and fortune is all about. The plot will (hopefully) have a big part to do with Morrigan's activities at he end of Origins. Unless they downplay it into a side story, which'll suck.

I'm still sad I won't be able to play alongside my in-game lover Alistair and rule over the Grey Wardens as my character. :[

A bit more info: apparently the game will scrap the multi-origin/race concept of the first game, and be more like Mass Effect 1 & 2: only one character, named Hawke, who you can give your own first name and who can be male or female. They will be human.

"Dragon Age 2 thrusts players into the role of Hawke, a penniless refugee who rises to power to become the single most important character in the world of Dragon Age. Known to be a survivor of the Blight and the Champion of Kirkwall, the legend around Hawke's rise to power is shrouded in myth and rumor. Featuring an all-new story spanning 10 years, players will help tell that tale by making tough moral choices, gathering the deadliest of allies, amassing fame and fortune, and sealing their place in history. The way you play will write the story of how the world is changed forever."

I have to admit, it's a bit disappointing, but I have faith in Bioware, after all: Mass Effect was good even though you were limited to one MC.

I'm all for this. In this history of my personal gaming experience, I have never once found a main character that never said a word to be memorable at all. I remember men and women with voices and personality. To deny a player such attributes is shoddy game-making and one of the worst parts about the first Dragon Age.
  • CuatroChihuahuas
I agree about the lack of a voiced protagonist, and honestly don't know why it wasn't done in the first game, but I really liked my MC from my first play through. Even if she did creepily remind me of Gillian Anderson...

I guess I can agree forcing you into the skin of a human only is backward. I don't lament not being able to continue the story from the first though. I still see that as potentially something to do down the road. If they don't bring Morrigan back at some point, I'll quit Bioware forever.
  • CuatroChihuahuas
I can't imagine we won't see her again at some point. If not in this game, then in the next. If we don't, then that's just an epic failure of the series, at least in my opinion. And I really liked playing as an elf :(.

WOOT! February 1, 2026 is way too early though, has me a bit worried. That's a REALLY short dev time for how expansive this game is. I think my GameInformer might be on the brink of expiration and I hadn't planned on renewing it but of course the ONE issue I *must* have is coming...! Must check into that. *_*

The release date has been reported as March 2011 as well. I'm sure they won't have a problem delaying the release date. remember what they did with the PC version? they pushed that back a few months so they can release it with the consoles.
  • CuatroChihuahuas
Yeah, but it's possible they had already been working on the sequel before the other one even came out (maybe)? Plus, we don't know for sure that Feb 1 is the release date, so we'll just have to wait and see. I was just about to start up Awakenings, too, ironically. I'm hopeful they have patched it (at least a bit) since it did some updates... we'll see. I am really anxious to hear more about this sequel, though.
