The gaming community and the general public are both very hard to judge. There are very few games where you can definitively say will or won’t sell well. For example with the hundreds of Wii or DS titles that don’t fare well by the critics, but the public still eats ‘em up. In yet another example of this, Sega reported its results for the fiscal year ending March 21, 2026 and surprisingly Aliens vs. Predator sold more copies than Bayonetta. Bayonetta’s reviews couldn’t have been better yet in the U.S, Europe and Japan together it sold 1.35 million units compared to the 1.69 million units of Aliens vs. Predator sold in just the U.S and Europe. And here I was thinking Bayonetta would easily sell on her looks and charm alone…

Multiplayer modes are really a big deal these days so it probably helped AvP sell copies with their horde mode and excellent free for all death matches. Although so many people saw Bayonetta as a clone of games like Devil May Cry, once you got to play it — it was a completely unique experience. I know there are a ton of AvP fans out there and they go see their crappy movies all the time but I would have never thought that Aliens vs Predators would outsell Bayonetta.

On a side note, the Mario & Sonic games continue to be a huge hit selling 6.53 million units of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games in the U.S and Europe. Once again, the gaming community proves that they don’t need critics to tell them what to buy.

Well obviously her tits aren't big enough.

Dana linked me to this article.

The problem with Bayonetta, as I said to someone earlier, was that it's not marketed as a "quality" game. By this I mean it, uh, kinda hurts itself by first impression. I mean, when I'd walk into Blockbuster looking for a game to rent, I look back now and am like, wow, it was pretty easy to skip over because I couldn't take the box seriously. Literally, it made Sega look like one of those desperate kiosk people in the middle of the mall--"Please buy it!? Her butt is nice!?" I even questioned if some of these reputable game sites had lost their brain when they had given it ridiculously high score. Thats what made me play it, though. I can't lie. I'm glad I did, but it certainly doesn't scream "Play me, I'm one of the greatest action games on the planet." This is unfortunate, because it ...is. This saddens me, actually. Probably why I'm like, an unofficial advocate of this game. I do agree with the previous comments, though. AvP had a fanbase ready.

I agree and i think it goes even further than the cover. Even ppl who watched me play the game weren't too impressed. it's really when you pick it up that you realize how much fun the game is. but i wouldnt say it was that great of a game, personally i thought the game got repetitive after awhile. the bosses were repeats after lets say the 4th boss on, there were stupid car/rocket riding levels and they made you work too hard to unlock new moves/weapons. I think everyone should play it to about the 60-70% mark and then put it away cause thats when the game stopped being fun for me.

There's nothing that can really be added to this comment, except that I agree totally.

Yeah I totally agree with this. When my husband rented the game, I rolled my eyes at it. Oh, another cliche over-sexualized heroine? I wasn't interested. But I gave it a shot, and I am glad I did. The game play is really fun, and while the plot isn't the strongest, I did enjoy the comical moments that popped up.

Dana nailed it; AvP was not a good game and Bayonetta was.

Bayonetta is really the best pure-action game that I've played in some time. The game design is largely brilliant, save for some puzzles that annoyed me to some degree. There's a level of difficulty that suitable for any skill level, and the SEGA fan service is fantastic. It's a quality title, especially on the Xbox 360.

AvP, on the other hand, has seen middling reviews at best and relies on its multiplayer capabilities to drive sales. Perhaps it's true that MP games are driving this generation, but I'll take-- and recommend-- a solid single-player experience over a mediocre multiplayer game any day.

Yeah, this is surprising to me since AvP was NOT a good game, but like Tigresa said, its fan base was already there. It took me a while to warm up to Bayonetta...I was kind of turned off by the game in general, but I loved the game play and I thought the characters were pretty likable and fun. I still need to pick up the game, and I think I saw that it was on sale for the PS3.

Well, granted AvP already had it's established large fanbase it was an easier audience to sell to from the starting point. Bayonetta still did fairly well as an IP which we as gamers always cry and whine we want more of, but I'm kind of disappointed too that she didn't sell better, especially with Famitsu dropping their pants over it and everything, man.
