With plenty of buzz abound for Atlus’ upcoming retro throwback “homage” title 3D Dot Game Heroes, the company has decided to release some new screenshots pimping the game’s English localization. The screens clearly show the attention to detail both for the game’s unique three-dimensional pixel-filled graphics and the overall “old-school” aesthetic that the game has come to be known for.

Some of the text included with these new screenshots hint at Atlus’ plan to include plenty of classic gaming references and tongue-in-cheek humor. Indeed, much of the game is meant to be a parody of some of the past’s most well-known gaming conventions. This particular batch of screenshots is available for your viewing pleasure below.

Set in the land of Kingdom of Dotnia, 3D Dot Game Heroes will feature a very familiar setting including swords, spells, sages, and the restoration of world peace via destruction of an ultimate evil. Players will take on a young hero and lay waste to fiends in a familiar overhead perspective. Also included is the ability to customize the look of the player’s humble protagonist using the in-game 3D dot editor.

The release date has been set for May 11th, 2010. And, yes, Atlus still plans to release 3D Dot Game Heroes for only $39.99. More information on the title will become available at the 3D Dot Game Heroes website.

This game reminds me a lot of Half-Minute Hero (if only because of the similar throwback to retro games) and also Contact. I've always enjoyed classic games so these newer releases capturing the same appeal really attract me.

Also, custom characters made pixel (or "dot") by pixel?! Sign me up right freakin' now.
