Ah, marriage. Once a gamer friend, Mr. or Mrs. Couple has now been tied in the bounds of matrimony and you are wondering if you should still get them the same types of games as in years past. Or, maybe, you are married to a non-gamer and are looking for a way to bring them into gaming this holiday season. Also, avid gamers marry other avid gamers and buying a gaming present for a love that has the same interests as yourself can be difficult. Never fear because Spawn Kill’s Holiday Gift Guide for Married Gamers is here, detailing games that would be excellent gifts for those married game players in your life.

Platform(s): Wii

For many gamers, our first gaming experience was a platformer with a mustachioed plumber. Whether you are working on getting your significant other to embrace gaming as you do or looking for a game to tackle together, Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. Wii would make a great gift for that married gamer in your life. Not only is the action comparable to those 2D titles of the past, but this title includes and is made better by its co-op. No, I’m not talking about taking turns and waiting for your little brother significant other to fall into the great unknown so you can finally get a turn. New Super Mario Bros. Wii allows for simultaneous play with a partner or three and will provide an excellent gaming experience with its 2D graphics and natural controls.

Borderlands

Platform(s): Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 & PC

Working together, that’s what it’s all about in relationships as well as Gearbox’s Borderlands. The marriage of RPGs with FPSs come together well in this new co-op classic with a fantastic post-apocalyptic setting and captivating loot-hunting action. Whether you are looking for an game to help your married gamer build their relationship with their loved one or are wanting to get that special man or lady friend to play a game with you, Borderlands is a uniquely fun experience.

Survival. The biggest factor in the success of my marriage was the fight for survival. Working through college, unexpected pregnancies (sorry, kids), and tremendous amounts of credit card debt were the biggest stressors in the early part of our marriage. However, it always seems like we look back to that most stressful time as some of the best moments ever. Bring back those fond memories, that fun, that desire to survive in Left 4 Dead 2. Work with that loved one and friends to survive the zombie apocalypse. Give that married gamer in your life a game that lets them work side by side with their spouse and overcome blitzing zombies.

Until now my selections have all been focused on working cooperatively, but sometimes, especially in a marriage, frustrations build up and working, agreeing, and even living peacefully with your significant other the last thing on your mind. A great way to get out those frustrations is a nice game of TEKKEN 6! Give your married gamer the ability to kick the crap out of opponents, virtual or real, and feel that wave of relaxation rush over them. And, if the gamer you are buying for is your spouse, you can rest easy with the knowledge that you will playing the best multiplayer that Tekken 6 has to offer, same tv and side by side.

Animal Crossing: City Folk
is a game for those gamers on different schedules. A game where you essentially build, collect, and decorate, Animal Crossing is a relaxing title that is loved by many types of gamers. A great way to play City Folk is to work with your loved one, at separate times to decorate your house and leave messages to one another. Not only will the couple looking for time together get written messages (who does this anymore, really?) but will get a chance to look into the interests and decisions their partner makes while they are absent. Finally, City Folk is a great conversation starter for those who’s conversations tend to stray towards the same ol’ same ol’.

Though games are usually the preferred gifts of gamers, there is a plethora of other gift ideas for those gamers in a relationship. Here are two hot items for the 2009 holiday season:

Twosome_BlanketThe Twosome blanket

Any self-respecting married gamer already has a Snuggie, the blanket with arms, you know the one that you’ve seen on tv. However, how can a couple share the warmth of a blanket, each other, AND play games at the same time? Why, the Twosome Blanket of course. This snuggie-for-two is made of 100% Icelandic Wool and can be purchased at www.birkiland.com.

Nothing says class like limited edition art prints, especially when the subject of said prints is in the realm of video games. Married persons have a tendency to want pictures in their home that represent them both. That or one person gets to decorate this room while the other decorates another. Either way the artists at Gallery 1988 bring video games into attractive and interesting art pieces that will fit into many decorative settings. Give something different to that married gamer this year…give ART! (Monocle and cigar are optional.)

Nice write-up, but humorously enough, the latest Penny Arcade comic refutes your claim about Super Mario Bros. Wii. It’s actually pretty funny; check it out.
