Fighting Fantasy: A First-Person Action RPG on Your DS

While the DS is host to a long list of RPGs, most of these are fairly traditional, with most taking a retro SNES style or a more modern, third-person, 3D view. However, Big Blue Bubble is bringing first-person action RPG to Nintendo’s handheld. For those of you who’ve always dreamed of having an Oblivion-esque experience on the go, your prayers may have been answered in the soon-to-be released Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, based on the choose-your-own adventure novel of the same title.
“Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is our most ambitious Nintendo DS project to date,” said Damir Slogar CEO of Big Blue Bubble, Inc. “Driven by the vision of bringing next gen console gaming to the handheld platform, as well as our passion for role playing games, we spent the past few years working on a game that will showcase how this FPSRPG on Nintendo DS can and should look.”
You play as a lone warrior, exploring the mysterious old Dwarven Keep of Firetop Mountain, of whom many have ventured, but none have returned. You must battle hoards of foul creatures, minions of an evil Warlock now inhabiting the keep, in your quest, using an intuitive drag-and-drop system to manage your inventory, weapons, and spells along your journey. Staying true to the original print version, you’ll be offered questions in the course of your quest that will ultimately affect the outcomeof your adventure, meaning players must be careful when choosing their path throughout the adventure.
The game is being published by Aspyr Media, who recently announced that those who pre-order the game will be treated to the added bonus of a copy of the book from which the game was based. Because the novels are a UK series, this special pre-order bonus may be the only way for US gamers to get their hands on a copy of the book. The offer is good while supplies last, and with only a few weeks until the game’s release, those interested in reserving their copy of the game (and the novel), will want to act quickly, as quantities of the book are limited.
Check out our gallery below for concept art and screens, as well as a cover of the book included with your Gamestop pre-order. Or check out another trailer that showcases more of the game itself (including the menu system) here.
