Gamers to Boycott Modern Warfare 2

Posted by IcyStorm on August 10th, 2009

So we have expensive Modern Warfare 2 collector’s editions, price increases overseas, a required peripheral for upcoming titles such as Tony Hawk: Ride and DJ Hero, and an infuriating comment on raising game prices by Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. It’s understandable that gamers are frustrated and mad at the company that is seemingly taking its customers for granted.

Some gamers have created an online petition (let’s save the laughter for later, folks) to protest Activision’s recent business moves and the arrogance of Kotick. The petition states that the undersigned will boycott Modern Warfare 2 at retail price, but it doesn’t say anything about other Activision titles.

At the time of writing, the petition has 7,238 signatures, a respectable amount but probably not enough to force Activision into doing anything, or even enough to get a response from the company.

I signed just because I don’t like what Activision is doing in the UK…I mean the standard edition of MW2 equates to about $90 US. I added a little zing to my petition, stating that I might just have to pick up a copy of Brutal Legend right away…lol.

Yes, I think I remember seeing that somewhere… I think asking $100 US for a game (only) DOES deserve a boycott/petition. LOL. I personally can’t wait for Brutal Legend and am very happy that Activision has to sit and cry itself to sleep for being such an asshole about the whole thing while they watch it sell really well.

Hmm… hadn’t heard about this one… Well, on the one hand, if you’re going to do something like this, you would think you would be a little more professional about it (the petition statement is full of errors and spelling mistakes). While I have no love for Activision, they are in business to make money, so of course they are going to want to charge as much as they want (referring to the stupid comment about wanting to charge even more). At the same time, the best way that customers can work against this is by voting with their wallet: if people pay their outrageous prices, then they are going to keep on keepin’ on, so-to-speak. Companies will price their items at the cost the market will bear (although I do wonder about Sony, sometimes…). The other, biggest problem I have with their complaint is they’re talking about (for the most part), extras here, like special editions, etc., and not even the base game. These are always optional. Can be very nice to have, yes, but it does seem to me a little whiny in a lot of ways…. Thanks for posting this story, though, since I hadn’t heard about it.

You’re kinda right. People will always bitch about something. The big boys do NOT read online petitions, they just scoff at the face of free internet viral talk about their game. People will buy it regardless of it’s price. It’s just that important.
