Map Pack 2Map Pack 1 for Treyarch’s Call of Duty: World at War was an instant hit. The map pack ended up selling over 2 million downloads from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 combined. Those new maps, in my opinion, added a much needed boost to the online multiplayer in World at War. Now only a couple of months after the release of Map Pack 1 we are getting Map Pack 2 which includes another 3 new maps and a new zombie map.

For the longest time Treyarch never gave us a solid release date. But as of yesterday it was announced, on the Call of Duty website, that the next map pack will be releasing this Thursday June 11th for The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

The new map pack will include 3 new multiplayer maps: Corrosion, Banzai and Sub Pens. The map pack will also include a new zombie level called “Shi No Numa”. “Corrosion” is a medium sized map, which was inspired by the movie Enemy at the Gates. It has 3 main routes to fight in with 2 floors. The 2nd floor, being a catwalk system, has a ton of places to sit and wait for people to run past you on the bottom floor. It is described by Treyarch as a perfect map for CTF or Headquarters. “Banzai” is described as Treyarch’s most beautiful map. It was inspired by the movie Bridge On the River Kwai. The bridge is obviously the focus of the map as it provides the best vantage points for snipers. The draw back is the bridge is extremely high above the river and you don’t have much cover. From the videos I’ve seen the map looks really big even though Treyarch says it’s a medium sized map. There are a lot of different pathways to take when you are running around this big map. There are the tunnels underneath the bridge, the long river, the many different caves that lead to the waterfall and the villages surrounding the bridge. “Sub Pens” is one of the smallest maps you will find in World at War. The setting is a bombed out Japanese submarine docking station. One of the first tings you will notice in the map is the close quarters combat. You’ll fight through many different corridors including inside and on top of the subs. This is also the first World at War map where the elements will affect your play. There is a monsoon going on and you will have to fight through the rain. From the various videos I’ve seen “Corrosion” and “Sub Pens” seem to be a great map for objective based games like CTF or Headquarters. In both maps I didn’t see that many people sniping so it seems like its mostly close quarters fighting. “Banzi” could be one of those levels where everyone always snipes from the same spots and the game never gets to the kill limit. We’ll have to wait to see how that level will turn out because it is a bigger level. The big levels always seem to get skipped since most games on big levels go the maximum time limit.

Just like the first map pack Treyarch is giving us a new zombie level to go with the multiplayer maps. The new level “Shi No Numa” takes place in a village surrounded by swamps. This is the first zombie level in which you can leave the “safe house” and fight outside. You can choose to go from house to house looking for those Perk machines or you can see how long you can hold up where you are. The zombies will be coming from the swamps and it’s hard to see them due to the mist surrounding the swamps. Since you can actually leave the structure you are in, this new zombie level is much bigger than the last one. The map will have some new traps including one called the “flogger” which is a brutal trap that has two giant logs with spikes on them that spins around when activated. This map will also come with 10 new achievements/trophies.

Map Pack 2 will be released on June 11th for 800 Microsoft points or $10 on the PSN. You can find out more about the new maps by going to the World at War website and you can go to Gametrailers to check out the new “Shi No Numa” trailer. Hopefully we will have a review of the Map Pack up soon so don’t forget to come back and check that out.

I don't play WaW much anymore, but I am a sucker for the Nacht der Untoten maps. Perhaps we can do a giveaway with this map pack!
