If you love rhythm games, I guarantee you will become addicted to “Rhythm Tengoku Gold”, (known as “Rhythm Heaven” outside of Japan), when it hits the US on April 5.

I attempted to play an imported Japanese version, but it proved to be difficult after a certain point since I couldn’t read the directions to any of the mini games. However, the games that I did manage to get through were extremely addicting and incredibly enjoyable.

In total, there are ten sets of stages and five stages per set; every mini game has its own catchy, unique tune. The objective is simple: keep the rhythm. Game play revolves around the stylus and touch screen, and control types vary from song to song, consisting of four different “moves”: tap, flick, slide, and hold. Difficulty increases as you move from stage to stage, and your performance is graded after completing a stage. Grades include “Superb”, “OK”, “Just OK”, and “Try Again”. If you receive a “Superb”, you will be able to unlock additional mini games and rhythm toys, and all grades except “Try Again” allow you to move onto the next stage.

The game’s soundtrack is both simple and catchy; all of the songs in the game are original and include music created by Tsunku, as well as other musicians including Canary Club and The Possible.

All in all, the game is very similar to “Wario Ware” in the sense that it consists of several mini games that you must play to unlock the next. It’s not a high-tech, intellectually stimulating game; but it is a game rhythm fans - both new and old - will welcome into their hearts.
