TellTale seems to be on a roll: they’ve followed up last year’s stellar Tales of Monkey Island with the currently running Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse, but they’re only just getting started.  The end of this week left us adventure fans with plenty to get excited about, as the developer released a glimpse at what you can expect over the next few months.

ch5_logoThose of you who have been following my reviews of the episodic adventure Tales of Monkey Island by TellTale will know I’ve had very little bad to say about the game, overall.  After playing through dozens of ho-hum point-and-clicks, many that suffer from poor writing, irritating, uncreative puzzles, and frustrating bugs, the latest romp through the Caribbean with Guybrush Threepwood has been a breath of fresh air.  But how does the momentous finale, Rise of the Pirate God, stack up against the other four episodes?  As Guybrush would probably snicker and say, “Does it sink or swim?”

wiiwareLast week’s update was great (Lost Winds: Winter of Melodias!) and while this week’s update may not be nearly as exciting, perhaps in some ways it is even more so.  Why?  Because Zombies Ate My Neighbors is finally available via Virtual Console.

Yes, it is a weird game, but you just don’t see stuff like that made anymore.  Back when Zombies were “real,” man.  Now I just have to wait for them to release Duck Tales.

The third episode of Tales of Monkey Island is finally available, and if you haven’t already played it on PC, you OWE it to yourself to get this version.  Trust me.

Check out a video of Zombies Ate My Neighbors and the full list of releases hitting your Little White Box today.

ch3We’re now officially at the halfway mark of the Tales of Monkey Island series, and so far it’s been a bumpy journey; both for Guybrush and us gamers.  While the first episode set off to a good start, the second was lacking and frankly a bit disappointing.  Even as big a fan of Adventure games as I am, I wasn’t looking forward to the next installment (The Lair of the Leviathan) as much as I could have been.  However, I will admit right away that my reservations were unfounded: not only is this third chapter the best so far in the series, it is also one of the most enjoyable adventure games I’ve played.

I’ll be honest with you: I love Adventure games, and the fact that we’ve had a recent resurgence of them, whether they’re updates of old games or new franchises, makes me one very happy gamer.  If you read my review of the first chapter of Tales of Monkey Island you’ll know that I had very little to complain about.  But for those of you still on the fence about this series from TellTale, or for those who may be purchasing the game on an episode-by-episode business, read on to see what I thought about the second chapter: The Siege of Spinner Cay.

talesofmonkeyislandPlayers of the first chapter of Tales of Monkey Island can continue their adventure with the second chapter, titled Siege of Spinner City, on August 20 for the PC. The WiiWare release will follow soon thereafter, although on an unknown date.

Tales of Monkey Island is the fifth installment in the Monkey Island series, in which players control pirate Guybrush Threepwood and try to save his lover and save the Caribbean. The Monkey Island series consists of all graphic adventure titles, and Tales of Monkey Island will be released in five parts.

titlesmEven the most diehard point-and-click adventure fans will admit the heyday of adventure gaming seem to belong past.  Still, these games seem to be making a comeback lately, with venues like Nintendo’s DS and Wii opening the door for both ports and new games alike.  Particularly making waves recently (sorry for the awful pun), was LucasArts’ recent revelation of Monkey Island: Special Edition, an updated version of the classic, being released July 15 on PC and XBLA.  Following on its coattails (or should I say, proceeding it?) on July 7 was Telltale Games’ first installment of the new game Tales of Monkey Island, the first truly new game in the Monkey Island franchise in years.
