Game Over: Video Games on the Silver Screen

Posted by WITA on December 22nd, 2009

Game Over: Video Games on the Silver ScreenVideo game based movies drag around an embarrassing history with a charm akin to a rotting corpse that was left in the sun, and frankly it’s not all that surprising. Some things own too much baggage to survive the transfer from medium to medium without dropping a few key items here and there, and oftentimes what does worm its way through the wreckage resembles a hideous mutant spawn that can barely manage intelligent human speech let alone impress anyone as some lovable lost puppy. Not much else needs to be said: Video game films are practically doomed from the start screen, much to the frustration of hundreds of controller-wielding fans.

3D Dot Game Heroes Coming to America

Posted by Joshiepoo on October 28th, 2009

3ddotgame

Hurray! Another wacky Japanese PS3 game is being released in America. Yesterday via Sony’s PlayStation twitter and Siliconera we got confirmation on the rumor that 3D Dot Game Heroes will be coming out in North America for the PlayStation 3. No publisher was detailed, but since Sony Computer Entertainment America made the announcement we should consider them the front runner.

I had no idea what this game was about, so I did a little research for you all. It’s a game developed by From Software, makers of Demon’s Souls (which means it will be hard) and takes place in a classic RPG kingdom whose king, following the successful defeat of a demon lord, declares that the world should be in 3D. As you can tell from the picture above something goes horribly wrong and it is your job to find out. Ain’t that always the way?

Dante's_Inferno

You’ve heard of Dante’s Inferno, right? The game with the crazy marketing from EA and message board posters calling it a “shameless God of War clone.” Well, now Visceral Games have announced that the writer from Monster’s Ball and Academy Award Nominee Will Rokos will be providing the storyline for the upcoming game.

Rokos has been enjoying himself while working on the project which gave him the opportunity to “re-imagine Dante as a flawed hero with a dark past, and his determination to save the love of his life from a terrible fate. It was a truly unique experience to re-create one man’s hell, one circle at a time.”

Dante’s Inferno is looking at a February 2010 release and I am really looking forward to see how much “creative license” the development team takes with this tragic comedy.

pspgo fakeMy dad wasn’t kidding when he said everything is made in China these days. This sleek PSP Go ripoff is the next product in the fine line of fake portable devices from the fine makers in the Republic of China.

Called the Slide Panel Retro it has up to 4GB of space, a built-in camera, mp3 player, and built in software emulation. Your features sound like everything I could ever want in a device, but your blatant exploit of the PSP Go’s design is making me have commitment issues. Get your act together China, seriously.

wii_heartTrying to gauge what kids like used to be extremely difficult. Do they like PokĂ©mon, Power Rangers, Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob? Should I go with Star Wars or Barbie? Are Nerf guns still cool? So many different products – but these days, there are two things kids can agree on: Nintendo Wii and DS are awesome and they can’t get enough of them. In a study done by SmartyPants, the top most loved brands for American children are the Nintendo Wii, coming in at number one and the Nintendo DS coming in at number two.

Logo_Club_Nintendo_by_Shinko_OGet on your green tights and wooden shield because Club Nintendo finally has something else worthwhile to spend those treasured coins upon.  The latest addition to the Club Nintendo rewards list is none other than a 3 pack Legend of Zelda poster set.  I don’t know about you, but I love washing my walls in gaming and movie posters, and it’s actually quite difficult to find any decent LoZ ones to buy.

Do You Remember Legend of Legaia?

Posted by Kevin "K-Tuck" Tucker on September 3rd, 2009

legaia coverDo I remember Legend of Legaia? You bet! The brainchild of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc.’s Contrail studio (known for the Legaia series and Alundra 2), Legend of Legaia was a small development team’s dream of an amazing fantasy role-playing game, of a grand tale in a fully-realized 3D world. Theirs was a also dream with limited hype and short-lived popularity. Their Legend, however, sticks around even to this day as one of the more unique role-playing games to come out on the PlayStation.

Do You Remember Vagrant Story?

Posted by Kevin "K-Tuck" Tucker on August 13th, 2009

vagrant artDo you remember Vagrant Story? I would hope so. Vagrant Story, developed by Square, came out during what I refer to as the Golden Era of 32-bit RPGs, the years 1996 through 2000. Receiving a rare perfect score from Japanese video game magazine Famitsu, Vagrant Story was leaps and bounds beyond its competition in terms of graphics, art style, and game mechanics.

Wllace & Gromit CastI wasn’t sure what to expect going into Wallace & Gromit’s fourth and final adventure in their first season, The Bogey Man. I had a feeling I was going to be left in a state of confusion and bombarded with references I didn’t quite grasp, due to hopping onto the final episode in the four part series. To my delight, however, I felt that I experienced this episode to the fullest, the job Telltale has done here with making it feel self-contained is commendable. There were a couple points where it was clear they were referencing previous episodes, but it was either explained through character dialogue or just fit so well with everything else that was happening it didn’t bother me.

brutallegend2Gamers that may still have been concerned about the release of Brutal Legend can now rest easy: a settlement has been reached between Double Fine and Activision. Activision knew that Superior Court Judge Craig Karlan had told attorneys he would “deny Activision’s request and allow the game to be released on time.” Then, a previously scheduled hearing that was planned to allow Activision to speak their mind about why the game shouldn’t be released was canceled. Through the magical powers of deduction, a settlement has clearly been achieved. Details will surely be forthcoming.

According to sources, Electronic Arts will be publishing Brutal Legend. Here’s hoping that the October 13th release date will be upheld.

bahamut-box-2Do you remember Bahamut Lagoon? Probably not. This gem of a tactical RPG was never released in America, though it was given a fan translation by the popular localization group DeJap. Bahamut Lagoon gave several unique features to the genre, blending traditional role-playing elements with some of the latest in turn-based tactics mechanics. The result, while kind of a mixed bag, was nothing short of phenomenal.

call_of_duty_4_modern_warfareA recent announcement has been made that Infinity Ward’s immensely popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be released for the Nintendo Wii right around the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for Xbox 360, Windows, and PS3.

The port will be handled by Call of Duty veterans Treyarch, known for the well-recieved Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty (5): World at War. This move may prove to be a successful venture on many fronts, as Nintendo Wii owners to date don’t get any of the big hitters from the usual cross-platform releases. If the popularity of Modern Warfare translates to good sales for the Nintendo console, perhaps bigger games will be heading in a similar direction.

Fans of the series can expect a release for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for Wii on November 10th.
