Last Thursday saw the release of the second (and last announced) bit of DLC for Resident Evil 5. While it is still set to be included with the upcoming Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition, this second episode and handful of extras has been dutifully doled out to the early adopters (like myself) still hungry for their action/horror fix. Titled Desperate Escape, this chapter details exactly how Jill Valentine and Josh Stone came to occupy the chopper that proved a timely aid to Chris and Sheva at the end of the main campaign.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 represents the best of everything Capcom had learned in their many years creating different fighting games. The gameplay is a blend of the more slow-paced and strategic Street Fighter 2 with the more varied and frenetic Alpha series. Air combos, alpha counters, and flashy finishing moves were combined with superior character balancing and deep fighting strategies to make Alpha 3 one of the best fighting titles of all time.

In 1994, Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft: Orcs and Humans revolutionized the real-time strategy genre, bringing a pleasing amount of depth and a subtle simplicity to a relatively-hardcore genre. Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness released in 1995, and not only introduced an all-new level of shine and polish, but also introduced many gamers to the world of online competition. The bar was set high for Warcraft III, and with Reign of Chaos, Blizzard proved that they are truly the kings amongst fantasy RTS fans.

Old-school RPG fans can now rejoice, for Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II are for the first time now available on mobile phones in North America. These iPhone releases mark the seventeenth (at least) re-release of the original Final Fantasy. Of course, these updated versions show all of the polish that comes with remastering a game once every year or so.

I was recently able to attend a live demonstration of 3D Dot Game Heroes, the upcoming parody/homage action/adventure title under the Atlus umbrella. During the demo, Atlus USA’s Manager of PR and Sales Aram Jabbari went through some of the bigger bullet points and finer details of the upcoming game.

The forthcoming ultimate collection of Resident Evil 5 (titled Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition) is set to include both new basic features for the main game and additional missions and characters to use in the updated Mercenaries Reunion gameplay mode. For everyone who already owns the bread and butter title, Capcom has released the new additions as downloadable content packs on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. The first of the new missions hit the PlayStation Network just this Thursday. Titled Lost in Nightmares, this new chapter follows BSAA Agents Chris and Jill through the original Spencer mansion on a dubious mission with a not-so-dubious climax.

3D Dot Game Heroes, the upcoming retro throwback gaming homage/parody action adventure role playing game straight out of the minds at Atlus, has been garnering a lot of attention for its three-dimensional pixels. The unusually breathtaking visuals of the game are both an impressive technical accomplishment and an interesting way to tap into the player’s imagination. Working further towards this ideal, 3D Dot Game Heroes will include an apparently-robust character editor where the possibilities are seemingly limitless.

In July 18th of the year 2000, Squaresoft (now Square Enix) released a game amongst their “Summer of Adventure†promotion named Threads of Fate. Released alongside Legend of Mana and the much hyped-about Chrono Cross, this simple story of two young persons going out in search of an ancient, powerful relic was largely overlooked by casual gamers and RPG fans on a budget. Though definitely not as successful or as sought-after as the two aforementioned titles, Threads of Fate is a lighthearted, charming adventure with just the right amount of moral implications.

Almost four years before God of War became a top priority amongst action game fans, Capcom’s Devil May Cry was the go-to title for fast-paced combat, impossible air juggles, and a brutal, bloody storyline telling a tale of redemption of revenge. Though the series is more or less on the backburner with modern-generation consoles, Devil May Cry was very much the precursor to some of the biggest games coming out this year.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is a title that many gamers cannot forget, be it willfully or not. By this point in time, the series has been an up-and-comer, a hot new title, a firmly-established series, and a repetitive, iterative franchise. Now, the games have come to be nothing but a fragile husk of their former glory. While interest in skateboarding titles has both waned and been redirected to a newer series, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 was at one point in time one of the best games available, for everything from graphics, soundtracks, and straight-up fun factor.

With plenty of buzz abound for Atlus’ upcoming retro throwback “homage” title 3D Dot Game Heroes, the company has decided to release some new screenshots pimping the game’s English localization. The screens clearly show the attention to detail both for the game’s unique three-dimensional pixel-filled graphics and the overall “old-school” aesthetic that the game has come to be known for.

Review: Polar Panic

Posted by Kevin "K-Tuck" Tucker on January 17th, 2010

Eiconic Games has aimed to combine modern-day visuals with old-school puzzle appeal. Their latest title Polar Panic hearkens back to a simpler era when characters moved a square at a time and story progression was denoted on a flat overworld map. While their fundamental goal was well-met, Polar Panic seems to lack a few contemporary staples.
