Posted by Future Man on September 10th, 2009
Trine is heading to retail shelves, which is awesome, because it’s a really fantastic game that you should buy. In other PC gaming news, the Stardock storefront, Impulse, has gone to Phase IV, which is extremely exciting news for everyone, as it’s somewhat more navigable now. In addition to this stuff, there’s some pretty hot sales going on at Steam and Direct 2 Drive, so get in on that cheap action.
Check out how slow PC gaming news was today, after the jump.

Some exciting news this week as ZeniMax has acquired the IP for Prey, my brain is excited knowing id could have a hand in developing a sequel. Cities XL has opened up to the public for the month of September, allowing you to take the city building MMO on a test run before it releases next month. There’s a mod coming out for Call of Duty 4 from a German team that looks like it takes its lasers seriously, it’s a Star Wars themed mod titled Galactic Warfare, we’ve got a trailer for you inside.
There’s one metric crapload of ways to save money on grabbing some PC gaming goodness this Labor Day Weekend, Steam, GoG, Impulse, and the usual places are offering some really great deals. Star Trek Online has opened up applications for the upcoming closed beta, which will provide players the chance to captain a really expensive spaceship. Lord of the Rings Online is expanding into Mirkwood, as a download only expansion with a few details now available.
Square Enix is about to release a WW2 RTS, Order of War, there’s some details on that inside and a demo available. It’s not a too shabby, either. Valve is about lay down the law to those cheating in Team Fortress 2 to obtain the dropped items, looks like they’re going to be able to kiss all of their ill gotten goods farewell. Lastly but not least, Blizzard has instituted a new service that allows you to change the faction your character belongs to, for a fee.
A couple of contrasting stories for you today, in hero and villain flavors. Cryptic’s MMO, Champions Online is now live, available on store shelves in North America and ready to go. Notorious patent troll, Tim Langdell, has stepped down from his fairly ironic position on the board at IGDA. But don’t worry, he provides plenty of laughable insanity in the letter explaining his departure.
Quite a few deals happening this weekend at the usual places, with a particularly great deal on the THQ Collector Pack on Steam. In addition to deals, there’s a substantial Dawn of War II DLC pack coming out next month, adding a three player co-operative mode to the game, you can get a look at the trailer in the full story.
Big important fancy news seems to have come to a bit of a standstill once again, with everything just about to start launching left and right, stealing all your money. But, we do have some news on the Aion open beta and when that goes up, as well as the head start program, for anyone itching to get their grind on. On the RTS front, there’s some exciting new details on the upcoming Command & Conquer 4, regarding the story and some gameplay stuff not seen in previous C&C fare.
Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdom are about to be forcefully remixed into a new, darker state, after years of hanging in a state of unchanging stasis, in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. The Dragon Aspect Deathwing appears to be the primary culprit behind the transformation of the land that 11 million people call home. If you aren’t familiar with the lore, and haven’t checked out any of the books, Deathwing is one of the most compelling antagonists Blizzard could have pulled out of their bag of tricks. In addition to this new villain, and familiar lands decimated are two new races, new class/race combinations, more levels, better graphics, and new areas.
Darkest of Days is ramping up for launch on September 8th, for the XBOX 360 as well as PC platforms, with an action heavy new trailer for the time traveling FPS from 8monkey Labs. The trailer showcases the horsepower the in-house developed Marmoset engine has under the hood. The trailer showcases the locations you’ll be visiting in history on something of an interactive field trip of destruction, basically the version of history I always wanted to learn about, but never actually happened.
Anyone tired of shoveling out money for MMO subscriptions should be glad to know that Guild Wars 2 will maintain series tradition of requiring nothing other than an initial purchase. Lots of juicy details have found their way out of hiding for this game, as well as a pretty sharp trailer that you can check out in the full story. Killing Floor just got updated with a significant content patch, adding two new weapons and a map, and it makes for a pretty good time. Ubisoft is opening up registration for beta testing their deception based RTS, R.U.S.E.
Hey folks, we’ve got a handful of Champions Online beta keys to hand out to five lucky people. In case you’re not familiar with the upcoming MMO from Cryptic, here’s the official description for the game itself.
ALT+F4 is jam packed with MMO news today, as well as clarification from Bethesda on Todd Howard indicating that the next Elder Scrolls game isn’t happening any time soon, which caused alarm for quite a few gamers out there. Guild Wars 2 has started the slow build up to Hypetown with a new teaser site. The Champions Online beta has opened up, and I’ve taken it for a bit of a spin. To ice the MMO cake, Realtime Worlds has announced that APB is not going to carry any subscription fees with it, gamers wallets rejoice!
Natural Selection 2 is just around the corner, while there is no exact release date available, pre-orders have gone up and trailers have teased a Fall 2009 date. The prospect of a sequel to one of the most hair-raising, terrifying, and fun games out there is enough to make your heart pound, or just confuse you. Either way, there’s a lot to look forward to, regardless of whether or not you have a level of familiarity with Natural Selection, the game, not sticking a fork in a toaster. Just in case you missed out on the original back in 2002, or just can’t remember it too clearly, we’ll go over the general idea.
