Atlus’ Shiren the Wanderer, based upon the popular Japanese Mystery Dungeon series, is something both old and new. Though the series has been prevalent on the other side of the globe for quite some time, North American gamers were first introduced to the randomized dungeon-crawling with 2008’s release of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer for Nintendo DS.  Now, this series (one that aims for hardcore role-playing gamers) is coming to the Nintendo Wii.

The game will follow the wandering ronin Shiren as he pals around feudal Japan with his female sidekick and pet weasel. The gameplay leans much more towards the sadistic side (much in-line with the recent Atlus release Demon’s Souls) where characters die permanently, and all items are lost when the protagonist dies.

The official blog has released several batches of screenshots, the latest of which you can find below this post. It looks to be a colorful and well-designed RPG, something the Wii could definitely use.

The biggest news concerning the game is that it has a firm release date that is not too far off. Shiren the Wanderer will be available to North American gamers on February 9th, 2010.

  • Pretty curious about this as well. The DS version, while difficult, seems to be incredibly robust and in depth. Wii games, on the other hand, tend to veer in the shallow direction. But...it's Atlus. So I'm not worried. <3
  • I'm actually glad to see this is coming to the Wii. I really tried to get into it on the DS but couldn't focus on it the way I wanted. As someone who enjoys Rogue-likes, and dungeon crawlers in general, I wanted to like this more but just couldn't. Meanwhile, have you tried the Xbox Live indie game Dungeon Adventure, yet? Very good interpretation of the genre; not too complicated.
