strangejourney_logo_transparentShin Megami Tensei fans have had a lot to be happy about lately, and it looks like Atlus is giving MegaTen fans even more to smile about.  Today they officially announced their newest SMT game, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey for Nintendo DS. One of the first original entries in the franchise in recent history, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is a first-person sci-fi RPG that has already received the highest Famitsu review score in Shin Megami Tensei history.

Hit the break for some more details on the story, a few screens, and some concept art.

A strange black spot (dubbed the Schwarzwelt) appears over the antarctic, causing a panic.  The Joint Project is formed to address the issue, and sends four groups of soldiers to the South Pole to tackle the issue.  You play as a member of the Strike Team, outfitted with a Demonica environment suit and posted to the Red Sprite under Commander Gore.  You soon discover that the Schwarzwelt is a strange and dangerous place populated by demons.  What is this mysterious phenomenon? It is up to you and your crew to find out before it engulfs the entire planet.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey returns to the roots of the franchise: it is a true dungeon crawler with the demon-recruitment scheme so familiar to fans of the series.  Those who enjoyed Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne will particularly appreciate this game, as it is in many ways a spiritual cousin of that game.  The game is already available in Japan, and is expected to release in Spring of 2010 for North America.

LOL. Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm like 100 hours into Persona 4 and still haven't finished and haven't had time yet lately to do so, either :S.
  • Sweet, another SMT game that will sit on my shelf after I buy it because I have no time for them!

    I hate life.

I've been sinking a bit of time into the Japanese release (fumbling around, of course since it's in Japanese) but it's remarkably different than the previous games. And I love it. It has a much more somber, realistic tone that I can't wait to experience thanks to Atlus. I'm so grateful the games get English releases.
