Guitar Hero 5: Rock Any Way You Want

833xguitar-hero-5

I can almost hear Steve Perry’s pure toned alto just reading about it.  A fairly impressive new video from the folks over at Activision and Red Octane showcases some of the new features and many pretty new visuals for the 5th installment in the Guitar Hero franchise.  And it does in fact claim that you can rock any way you want.  I’ll let you be the judge.  Jump for the rock-ety goodness.

Some of the new features showcased:

-the ability to jump in and out of any song at any time in multiplayer mode, great for bathroom breaks and beer runs
-the chance to rock out with 4 of any instrument, yes even 4 bass guitars if you want
-a gigantic new set list, with old favorites and a slew of new bands most people have never heard of
-Rockfest mode, which looks to add more party-centered mini-games to the experience and a healthy dose of competition
-more impressive new visuals
-Expert + mode which promises to see many plastic peripherals dashed to the ground in frustration
-more music making madness that will confuse some and thrill others

While many may just see it as more of the same, even skeptics can appreciate what’s shaping up to be an impressive entry into video game rocking history.

  • I love guitar hero, but its getting harder and harder for them to out-do themselves every year. I think with the inflow of more indie bands, Guitar Hero will be able to reinvent itself.

  • I'm actually NOT looking forward to this, and in reality I'm dreading its release.

Instead of taking the long lasting route that Harmonix took with Rock Band (DLC out the ass) they're just pumping out a brand new game every few months. While I certainly enjoy the concept on paper (and slightly in practice; I loved GH:Metallica) they're ending up with so little that's worth paying money for that they're going to screw themselves over.

With Harmonix, if there's a track I really want, it's 160 points and it's mine. With Guitar Hero, they have a handful of DLC tracks and then the rest of the tracks I really want are $60, with a bunch of extra crap thrown in.

To top it off, the curse of rhythm games is that they steal each other's tracks. A quarter to half the tracks in GH: Smash Hits is DLC for Rock Band, and I could easily get THE track I want, forgoing the other 40 that I don't. So far Guitar Hero 5's announced tracklist has only a few tracks available in another game, but the tracklist so far is nothing I'd pay money for. There are a few songs I very VERY much would like to have, but I'd much rather have them be DLC, which is something I'd get out of Harmonix.

I can definitely agree. When I see the new track lists there are a few songs that make my eyes shine and I'll emit a good "ooh" and "ahh" but when you skim the rest of the track list it usually won't appeal as much as the small handful that got your blood to pumping. Plus, like you said the songs that are in both games exhaust me and deter me from wanting both, which could be a big possibility for all gamers if this cross-track issue wasn't in our hands. Just license some more songs! Copycatting is shunned upon. But now that Rock Band's creators are allowing artists to add their own songs, I wonder how this will play out. I'm thinking Rock Band realizes there isn't much innovativeness that can be brought to the $60 disc each time around, so they're avoiding it altogether with a new system.
