The companion cube was the weighted storage cube. The hearts were a momentary addition to add a little emotion to that particular level. The character itself is all of those cubes!

I didn't include Auron or Vincent in the article (aside from a comparison to Tidus) for that very reason. They aren't that interesting. As you say, they're kind of one dimensional, brooding characters. Basch is not brooding at all. If you played the game, you'd understand that. He never broods at all that I can interpret. Don't get me wrong (rong?), I love a good brood. Often I will sit at my window and stare across town doing nothing but. It is for that reason that I can spot a real brooder from a non-brooder.

And Squall was quite a bit deeper than most people seem to realize. Cloud wasn't, and Aerith wasn't even truly his love interest. Crisis Core cleared that up nicely.

Auron, Vincent and Basch are the quiet brooding characters with a mysterious past. Current plot events rarely ever shape their personality, there's little or no growth. Someone dies, they coach the main character on or share their personal tragedy. The world is saved, they drift off into the sunset. Vincent is still brooding in the end of FFVII, Auron drifts off to deadland in FFXII and Basch... I should probably beat FFXII.

Typically, their stories are all told in flashbacks, which only causes the player to understand why the mysterious loner is suffering.

In some ways, it seems to me that Cloud and Squall were attempts at mysterious brooding heroes with unimaginable burden. But because they are the main characters in their franchises, they lose their bad ass appeal. Squall was completely ruined because he let a chick that used a dog for a boomerang to drag him around. Cloud has Sephiroth to thank for removing his love interest so he could concentrate on being full time brooder.

I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it more than any "Top Ten" I've ever read. I could feel your attachment to each character so passionately. Can't wait to read more of your work.
